This invention relates to an improved water-gate for use in irrigating ditches and the like, and `one object of the invention is to provide a gate which may be positively guided in its downward movement to a closed position and which may be firmly held ina closed position. p

This improved gate is to be placed in an irrigating ditch and for a shallow ditch will be constructedfas shown in Figs. l, 2' and 3. This gate shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3 is provided with a body plate l, the side edge portions of which will be bent inwardly to provide guiding` ianges 2 and the lower end portion of which will be bent up-v wardly to provide a trough 3 having its edge portions bent outwardly to provide a lip 4 which lip serves as a guide. When thisform of gate is in use, it
will be set in the ditch and may be anchored by being embedded in cement or may be secured in a vertical position across the ditch by any suitable means. When it isdesired to have water pass through the pipe 5, it is simply necessary to grasp the handle 1l. and draw the gate upwardly to a raised poH sition. When it is desired to shut oli the passage of water through the pipe, the handle will again be grasped and the gate shoved downwardly. The gate will be guided in its downward movement by the -flanges 2 and will be braced against bulging under water pressure by the flange or strip l0. The lower edge by being turned will be strengthened and can thus readily cut through small sticks which may have lodged above the trough 3. If the lower edge ot the gate should extend from the plate 1 a su'flicient amount to normally cause it to miss the trough, the lower edge ot the plate will strike the guiding strip 4 and thus the plate will be guided down into the trough. When the gate is shoved tightly into the closed position, the edge ot.' the bracing strip will engage the tace oi the guiding stripe 4 and thus pressure will be applied which will tend to force the plate 8 toward ,the-plate 1 and thus provide a very tight closure.;
In Figs. 4, 5 rand there has been shown a gate for use in connection with relatively deep ditches. In this form, the major por-- angle iron and have their upper ends con-y nected by a cross bar 15 which will also be formed .of ang-le iron. When this form of gate is used, it wil-libe mounted in the ditch after the manner set forth in connection with Ithegate disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and by passing'th'e securing pin through the openings 19and 20 and one of the openings 21, the gate can be securely held either ina closed position or in a raised position. lt will be further noted that the openings 21 through which the pin will pass when the gate is in the raised or open position, are
placed in the bar 13 so that the gate may be held entirely open or only partly open.4
