3 Claims.
My invention relates to water gates capable of general use, but especially adapted for regulating or controlling the flow of water for irrigation purposes through lateral irrigating ditches or canals.
Objects of the present invention are to provide a water gate of the above kind which is simple and durable in construction, capable of being readily installed for use, and so constructed that the movable gate member can be readily opened andclosed and will effectively resist distortion by the weight and pressure of the water although made of relatively thin and light material.
Further and important objects of the invention are to provide a 'water gate of the above kind which, when installed for use, will present no projecting parts or recesses around or against which silt and other obstructive matter may lodge and accumulate to interfere with the free and easy operation of the sliding gate member, and which includes novel and efficient means for tightly seating the sliding gate member upon final closing movement thereof.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a water gate embodying the present invention, installed ina concrete lateral irrigation ditch or canal.
Figure 2 is a Vertical transverse section on line 2 2 of Figure 1 looking at the up-stream side of the water gate; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present water gate includes a flat U-shaped frame 5, preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal, and composed of straight and relatively narrow vertical end portions and a smilar horizontal intermediate portion. The upper edge of this horizontal intermediate or sill portion extends upwardly and laterally toward the down-stream side of the gate as at 6 to give stiffness and rigidity to this part of the frame, as well as to cooperate with a part on the sliding gate member to tightly seat and straighten the lower portion of said gate member during its nal closing movement should the same be slightly bent or bowed by the water pressure on its up-stream side, and in a manner to be presently described. The side and intermediate portions of the frame 5 are provided with a longitudinal series of uniformly spaced openings '7 near the (Cl. (i1- 28) outer edges thereof to facilitate anchoring of the frame in the concrete ditch structure 8 as at 9, for bolting to a wooden ditch structure, or to facilitate the bolting of seal plates on the frame to facilitate proper installation of the gate in a ditch without other support than the surrounding earth, as the case may be.
Slidably disposed against the up-stream side of frame 5 is a vertically movable flat gate member 10 preferably formed of sheet metal and slidably connected to the frame by means of Z- shaped strips ll bolted or riveted to the gate member 10 adjacent the side or vertical edges thereof in position to project outwardly beyond the inner edges ofthe vertical side membersof 702A frame 5 at the down-stream face of the same.` n this way the movable gate member is slidably connected with the frame, and the upper edge portion of the movable gate member is rolled laterally as at 12 to to be grasped to facilitate opening and closing of the gate member. One of the side members of frame 5 is provided near the top thereof with an opening 13, and a longitudinal series of openings 14 are provided in the adjacent vertical edge of 86% gate member 10 for selective registry with the opening 13, so that the registered openings 13 and 14 may receive a pin 15 for releasably holding the gate member l0 in adjusted open position.
In this way the degree of opening of the gate i member 10 may be properly adjusted to effect the desired flow of water, or by substituting a padlock for the pin the gate may be locked in closed or any adjusted position to prevent tampering therewith.
Attached to the movable gate member 10 intermediate the sides of the latter and immediately above the lower edge thereof on the down-stream face of the same is a clip member 16 having a latterally and downwardly projecting arm 17 arranged to engage the inclined upper edge portion 6 of the horizontal member of frame 5, and to cooperate with the latter so as to tightly seat the gate member 10 at its lower portion during its nal closing movement, as well as to straighten the lower portion of the gate in case it should be slightly bent or bowed by the water pressure on its up-stream side. The seating of the lower portion of the gate member 10 is accomplished by the wedging action of the arm 17 and the inclined edge portion 6 of the horizontal frame portion. This construction is efficient in action although simple and affording no obstruction to the passage of silt and other foreign matter when the gate member is open. This is also true of the Z- provide a hand hold adapted 752i` shaped guide strips Il which are also on the down-stream side of the gate. In other words, the entire up-stream face of the gate andk frame present a plain flat surface with no projecting parts or Vindentations around or against which silt or other foreign matter may lodge or accumulate to interfere with the free and easy operation of the sliding gate member. It will of course be notedthat in the ,--nal closing` movement ofthe 4gate member 10, the arm `17 will en'- gage the sloping edge portion 6 of the frame sill, and act as a wedge to draw the lower portion 'of the gate rmly against the lower portion of theA frame so as to have a substantially water-tight seating engagement with the latter. Y
Minor changes in the exact shape, form or design oi the several parts illustrated in the drawing may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. What I claim as new is:
l. A water gate including a hat U-shaped frame having means-to facilitate anchoring of the same to the walls of a ditch. and composed of side members and a horizontal intermediate or sill member, the upper edge portion of said sill member being extended upwardly and laterally toward the downstream side of the gate, a flat vertically movable gate member disposed at the up-stream side of ythe frame, mea-ns at the downstream side, of thegate for slidably connecting the movable gate member with vthe frame, and a downwardly and laterally inclined arm attached to the down-stream sideof the movable gate member adjacent the bottom thereof and ar.- ranged to engage the upwardly and laterally directed upper edge portion of the sill tc straighten and tightly seat the lower portion of the' movable gate member against the sill of the frame upon final closing movement of said movable gate member'.
2. A water gate comprising a flat frame defining a water flow opening and including a bottom sill member having an upper edge portion sloping upwardly and toward the down-stream side of the gate, a fiat vertically movable-gate member arranged at the 11p-stream' side of the frame for controlling the ow of water through said opening, and an innlined arm on the lower portion of the movable gate member at the down-stream side of the latter arranged to cooperate with the inclined upper edge portion of the sill. to tightly seat the lower portion of the movable gate member against the sill upon nal closing movement of said movable gate member.
