Application filed December 11, 1916.
To all whom if may concern life it lniown that l, diurne S. SMART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of i illinois, have invented certain new and use- Hproved device of this general character which effectively serves to prevent the opening' of a window sash or the like irrespective of the pressure or lifting force which may be imposed thereon.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which includes a pivotally supported wedge member having coacting means for automatically adjusting the same into anoperative position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the pivoted wedge member has coacting therewith means to relieve the pivotal mounting thereof against strain or pressure whereby the strength and resisting power of the device is materially increased.

Each of the free longitudinal margins of -the sides 10 is disposed in different angles,
the upper angularl portion ay permitting a unobstructed upward movement to the sash L when the wedge member is in inoperative position as illustrated in Fig. 2 and the adjacent portion is disposed on such an angle as to contact with the shoulder 15 produced along the inner face of the adjacent side 2 of the casing C, whereby it will be at once self-evident that when the wedge member W is in applied position and force is being imposed upon the sash L, the pintle or bolt 7 will be materially relieved from said force.
I The adjacent marginal portion c is substantially parallel to the front wall or plate 9 and is defined by the :inwardly directed and perpendicular-ly related wing or extension 16 adapted to afford a bearing surface over which the sash L will slide when said sash L is being raised or lowered.
rIhe marginal portion d extends from the portion c to the outer end of the side wall and is arranged on such an angle as to rest against or contact with the back wall 1 of the casing C when the wedge member W is in operative position.
It is to be noted that when the wedge member lV is in operative position the lower end thereof terminates inwardly of the outer or free edge of the bottom wall 3 of the casing C so that it is rendered substantially impossible to engage the lower end portion of the wedge member from the outside of the frame F by an implement which would otherwise permit unauthorized lifting or upward movement being given to the wedge member W.
When it is desired to raise the sash L or to lower the sash U, the wedge member W is thrown upwardly to substantially a vertical position or until the same comes into contact with the sash U, as illustrated in Fig. 2 but as soon as the upper portion of the sash L passes below the pivoted end of the wedge member' -W, said member will be automatically forced downward through the medium of the spring S.
rl`he spring S as herein embodied comprises a substantially U-shaped member 17 which overlies the wall 11 when the wedge `member "W is in its substantially vertical. or
inoperative position, and the arms of said U-shaped member 17 terminate in laterally disposed and op'positely directedcoils 1S encircling the pintle or bolt 7 and are continued by the extensions 19 which are anchored to the side walls 2 of the casing C. lt is also to be noted that the coils 18 are positioned between the spaced sleeves or barrels 14 and that the adjacent portions of the top wall 11 are cut out, as at 20, so that the member 17 may properly coact with said wall 11 as has hereinbefore been set forth.
lt is to be understood that my present invention is not intended to maintain the sashes L and U in a closed position with their meeting rails substantially flush, but is adapted to be so arranged as to afford a pre determined relative movement of said sashes L and U as it is essential that the meeting ends of said sashes be in overlying relation before my improved holder becomes effective.
It will also be readily understood that my improved holder is one that Vcannot be picked or forced open from the outside and that its construction is such as to offset the action of a jimmy or other implements which may be used for a similar purpose.V
From the foregoing description, it Vis thought to be obvious that a sash holder constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and com-V paratively inexpensive naturel and Vis particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facilitywi'thrwhich it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without ma terial departure from the Vprinciples and spirit thereof and for this reason l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed. Y
I claim:
1. A holder of the character described comprising a member adapted to be engaged with a sash, a wedge member pivotally engaged with the first named member and capable of being swung upwardly and in vertical alinement with the member, and means for constantly urging said wedge member in a position to overlie the first named member, said first named member being provided with a shoulder with which the wedge member contacts when at the limit of its move-V ment toward the first named member.
2. ln combination with an opening and relatively movable closure members for said opening, a casing secured to one of said members, a wedge member pivotally engaged directly with the casing and capable of being swung upwardly and in vertical alinement with the casing, and automatic means for imparting movement to the wedge member in one direction, said wedge member when at the limit ofits movement under automatic influence coacting with the Vsecond closure member for holding the same against movement, said wedge member when at the limit of movement in an opposite direction permitting relative movement Vof said closure members. l A
3. In combination with an opening and iso Vpintle and capable ci Lacasse @ze relatively movable closure members for said opening, a casing secured to one or said members, a wedge member piyotally engaged with the casing, and automatic means for imparting movement to the wedge member in one direction, said wedge member when at thc limit oi' its movement under automatic influence coacting with the second closure member for holding' the same against movement, said wedge member .vhen at the limit movement in an opposite direction permitting relative movement of said closure members, said wedge member being provided with inwardly directed bearing surfaces with which the second named closure inemw ber adapted to engage when said wedge member is in inoperative position.

A holder of the class described comprising' a casing including outstanding side walls, a pintle supported by said side walls in proximity to an end of the casing and adjacent the outer margins of said walls, a wedge member including' an inwardly directed end plate pivotally engaged with the pintle and capable of being swungupwardly into vertical alinement with the casing, automatic means coacting with said end wall of the wedge member for constantly urging the :tree end of the wedge member toward the casing, shoulders carried by the side walls of the casing inwardly oi' the pintle, and side walls carried by the wedge member to contact with said shoulders of the casing when the wedge member is in operative position.

A holder of the class described comprising a casing including outstanding side walls, a pintle supported. by said side Walls in proximity to an end of the casing Aand adjacent the outer margins of said walls, a wedge member including an inwardly directed end plate pivotally engaged with the pintle and capable of being swung upwardly into vertical alinement with the casing, automatic means coacting with said end wall ci the wedge member for constantly urging the free end oi' the wedge member toward the casing, shoulders carried by the side walls of the easing inwardly of the pintle, and Side walls carried by the wedge member to contact with said shoulders of the casing when the wedge member is in operative position, the outer end portions of said side walls of the wedge member being beveled to Contact with the casing when the wedge member is in operative position.
