T all whom it may concern. 7 j i I Be it known that 1, Green H. TALBorr, a citizen of the United States residing at New Plymouth, in the county of Fayette and a State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water gates and is designed to cover a gate somewhat similar in principle to the device covered in my companion application filed under even date but embodyin structure which permits the device of the present invention to function differently from the device covered in my oopending application.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a simply constructed self-sustaining gate especially adapted for use in the laterals or tributaries of irrigating ditches.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gate which will permit backing up of the water to a predetermined level, provision being made to allow overflow of the water after a predetermined level has been reached.
A further object of the invention is to equip the gate with a spillway which will project the water beyond the gate to thereby prevent backing or returning of the water beneath the gate, the spillway being adjustable to vary the projection of the water.
The above and other objects of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein z- Fig. l is a front elevational .view of a water gate constructed in accordance with 40 my invention.

The device of this invention consists of a body plate generally designated 5 which may be of any desired configuration and is preferably constructed of non-corrosive metal. The corners at the lower end of the plate are beveled as indicated at 6 to facilitate anchoring of the plate in a lateral of an irrigating ditch as shown in i.

ofits lateral margins to provide parallel inner guides 7 and parallel outer guides 8. These guides extend from the lower end of the plate to a point in proximity to the upper end of the latter. The upper end of the plate has its margin rolled over, as indicated at9, to provide a thickened portion serving as an abutment through the medium of which the plate may be more conveniently anchored in the lateral. An opening 10 is formed inthe plate adjacent the upper terminalof the latter and approximately midway between the guides. The opening is shown at the present instance to be squared although it may be made of any desired configuration dependent to some ex tent upon the use to which the gate may be put.
Slidably mounted in the guides 8 is a closure or slide 11 consisting in the present instance of a blank of metal the upper margin of which is bent at right angles to provide an operating flange 12 through the medium of which the slide may be moved through Upward movement of the slide 11 is limited by the member 9 at the upper end of the plate which lies in the path of movement of portions of the slide which extend beyond the terminals of the flange 12. However, downward movement of the slide is permitted the full extent of the plate to permit the opening 10 to be completely uncovered.
In order to project water passing through the opening 10 for an appreciable distance beyond the gate a spillway 13 is provided which in this instance consists of a single sheet of metal the opposite ends of which are bent upwardly at right angles and ere tended to provide corners 14: which are slidably mounted in the guides 7. The body of the plate between the sides thereof is bent downwardly at an inclination so as to admit the water for an obvious purpose. The rear margin of the spillway projects upwardly beneath an overhanging lip 15 which latter is formed by turning over the lower wall of the opening 10.. This lip limits upward movement of the spillway. As is apparent, however, the spillway is adjustable in the guides 7 between the lip 15 and the bed of the stream.
This device is likewise formed by stamping in a well known manner following which the gate is assembled as above set forth. The
assembled gate is then-urged into the side Walls and bed of the stream as partially illustrated in Fig. 4; The slide 11 may be positioned to completely close communication through the opening 10, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings or to expose merely a part of the openingto thereby permit overflow of the water above the gate,
through the opening '10- into engagement with the spillway 13 and thence on thebed of thelateral. As above set forth the spillway is likewise adjustable to correspondingly vary thetrend of the water passing thereover.
Various changes may be made inv this device especially in the manner 01": constructing and assembling the plates. However, I have above described what now seems to be the preferred form of the invention but I am aware that minor changes may be made to produce the same or substantially the same result as that obtained by the present construction.
