snrris BED.
Application filed September 70 all 20/10/12, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, YosHio I-IAYASIXI, a citizen of Japan, residing at Hollywood, in the county of Los ..-t.ngeles and State of Culifornia, have invented new; and useful linprovements in Ships Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ships beds and baths, and has for its object to provide a novel construction and combination whereby a bed frame is so supported as to materially reduce the degree of oscillation of the bed frame during the rolling of a ship at sea. It is an object to provide means whereby a bed may be suspended so that it is capable of having a swinging movement, and means are further provided to control the speed of oscillation 01 to check the oscillating movement to a desirable degree for the broad object of preventing sea sickness of occupants of the beds. It is an object to provide a structure which may be utilized for supporting beds, or baths, or sofas, for instance.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved bed.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of one of the action retarding devices.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view partially in section of a center supporting pin.
The invention is here shown as adapted for supporting a suitable bed frame 2 of any desirable dimensions, although it is to be understood that the structure may be utilized to support bath tubs, tables, or other articles of furniture, such for instance as sofas, the purpose being to provide a primary support which, while capable of having some degree of oscillating movement, is yet of limited action. To the corners of the bed frame are detachably connected upwardly extending arch members 3 and these are detachably connected at 4t to the ends of an overhead spider or suspending device 5 having divergent arms radiating from a center pin 6. This pin is shown as provided with a conical point resting in a cup or socket provided in a stirrup 8 which is provided with upturned end arms 9 bolted or otherwise fastened as at 10 to a ceiling or other overhead means.
From this it will be seen that the frame 2 8, 1822. Serial at. 586,875.
is supported to swing by the engaging device, the arms of which are spaced to clear the upturned bracket ends 9.
A. feature of the invention consists of 'means for limiting the free oscillation of the suspended bed frame or other :device, and which means consists of a plurality of suitably arranged dash pots consisting of tubes 11. having bases 12 fastened to the floor or permit the ropes 14 to sink in the dash pots 50 and slack when the weights 13 attached thereto reach their downward limit of movement. In order to prevent the rapid down ward movement of the weights, they are of such design and construction that the resistance of the escaping air compressed below the weights in the dash pots checks the de scending movement of the weights, thus causing them to gradually settle the bottom of the dash pots. fhis practically renders the several weights noiseless in their settling movement, and at the same time permits them to be lifted with a desired degree of speed when the ropes Il i become taut as the frame parts move upward.
When the motion of the vessel at sea is not sufliciently great to cause sea sickness, the suspending links or straps 3 may be disconnected from the bed frame 2 and this will then be left in substantiallv stationar stable position upon the several dash pots which thus form legs supporting the frame structure 2. I
Further embodiments, modifications and changes maybe resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is: 1. An oscillating ships bed 'havlng a frame, disconnectible means for suspending the frame and permitting oscillation therei of, and means for checking the rate of oscillation of the suspended frame, said means Each weight 13 is connected as by 70 ward '1 novei means are operative and cushioned.
An oscillating shins hed having a frame, means for suspen linpg'the frame and nent, an d dash pots in which said permitting oscillation thereof and means for checking the rate of oscillation of the suspended frame, said means including dash pots having movable elements connected to the frame, and saic ,desh pots forming stationary legs for the frame when the latter is disconnected from the suspending means.
t. in oscillating ships bed having a frame, means for suspending the frame to permit 01? universal oscillation thereof, and dash pot connected to legs of the bed for checkin e' the rate of oscillation 01 the suspended itrmne.
In testimony WhQI'G/Oi I have signed my name to this specification.
