To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HORACE N. SIBLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Leveling Sh1ps7 Tables, of which the following is a specification. I

The invention relates to tables or supports, and more particularly to the class of self-leveling ships tables.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character which is designed for use upon vessels, trains or other moving bodies so that it will automatically balance itself to prevent any possibility of disturbance to the articles placed thereon, or food stuff supported by the same, as it will maintain a table top level irrespective of the inclination of its support or base.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character wherein the top thereof is supported in a novel manner so that it will automatically adjust itself to maintain an equilibrium at alltimes irrespective of the vibrations and swinging movements of the vessel, train or other moving body.

A further object of the inventlon 1s the provision of a table of this character wherein the top thereof is maintained at a constant level so as not to be affected by any variations in the movements of its base.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character which is simple in construction, strong, durable, automatic in its action for maintaining a constant level of its top, and inexpensive in manufacture.

WVith these and other objects in view, the

invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will table at an inclination to the top thereof. the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a table constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the support for the table at an inclination to the top thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of self-leveling table. Fig. 6 is a Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 designates the legs, 11 the feet thereof, and 12 the ring-like frame which constitute the support-or'pedestal of the table.

Formed at intervals on the ring-like frame 12 and depending therefrom are suitable attaching devices 13 for the connection therewith of flexible suspension straps 1a which are also connected to hooks 15 formed on a cylinder 16 which is made in two sections suitably connected together, and has journaled within the same diametrically opposed upper and lower friction rollers 17 and 18, respectively, for engagementwith a spherical bearing 19 mounted interiorly of the cylinder 16 for movably supporting the table top 20 which is connected to the said bearing in a manner presently described.

The table top 20 has detachably fixed centrally thereto at its under face a stem or standard 21 which is passed centrally through the bearing 19 and is fixed therein through the medium of a set screw 22 threaded in the said bearing 19, and this stem or standard 21 has mounted on its lower end portion a substantially pearshaped weight 23 which has threaded therein a set screw 24 for the fastening of the same on the stem or standard, the weight being designed to serve as a pendulum for maintaining a constant level of the table top regardless of the inclination of the support for the table.

The. spherical bearing 19 will rotate upon the rollers 17 and 18 within the cylinder 16 on the varying of the inclination of the supports for the table, and these rollers will minimize friction during such movements.

In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 there is shown a slight modification of self-leveling table wherein the cylinder 25, which is of the shape shown, is suspended from flexible straps 26 which are fixed to the ring-like frame 27 of the support for the table, the straps 26 being detachably engaged with hooks 28 formed externally on the cylinder 25, and working within the cylinder is a spider 29 at the terminals of which are journaled the rollers or wheels 30 which travel upon the inner surface of the cylinders 25, and adjustably mounted in the hub 31 of the said spider 29 is a vertical standard or stem 32 which supports the table top 20 at its upper end. ll iounted on the lower end of the upright or stem 32 is the Weight 3% Which maintains the equilibrium to the table top for sustaining it in a constant level irrespective of the inclination of the support therefor.
