`seription of the invention7 such `as-will enable others skilled in thefzart whichI .it appertains to make and' use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and eiiicient means for maintaining a table top in a condition of horizontality regardless of vibrationsl and oscillations of the support or base of the same, and more especially to provide a table which is adapted for use on ship-board, wherein the top is maintained in a proper position to hold and sustain the objects imposed thereon regardless of the rolling or pitching of the vessel, and in connection with the .gravita-y tional leveling means provided for the table to employ means serving to prevent a pendulous or prolonged swinging movement ot the table top; and with this object lin view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a. side view partly in section of a table embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the ring forming one element ot' the universal mounting7 Figure 4 is a detail section of a port-ion of one of the equalizing devices.
Figures 5 and 6 are elevations from different sides of a modified construction of the table.
1n the construction illustrated in Figures 1 to i inclusive the table top 10 is carried by a weighted stem 11 which is universally mounted upon a frame including the supporting disk 12 and the legs or standards 13 .which may be transversely connected by a suitable brace 14. The stem 11 is provided at its lower end with a weight 15 of suficient weight to insure stability and avoid vibration except under conditions involving unusual movement of the supporting vessel, said stein having a ball 16 provided with trunnions 17 which are mounted in seats 18 in a ring 19 which in turn is provided with trunnions 20 disposed in a plane at right angle, to thatofthestrunnions:18yandlare mounted .in bearings fin the disk` y12,**fto"the end 'that the weight 15 is adapted to tain thestem '11 in vatrulyv vertical position and.,hen'cefft'he table "top 10 'in lahorizont-al position regardless of movementyofthesup#v ppr-,ng frameV consisting fdisk` fand y .i
legs or standards y 13 olf' whicli't-he lower; ends of' the latter are p'ieerably*secured' a screws orbolts 21 tothe vesselV 'dekoiffl or.
` The weight is secured upon the stem'11 `hy means of a nut 22 or the equivalent thereof, and the attaching plate 23 at the upper end of the stem is preferably integral therewith andis secured by` screws 2li tojthe under surface of the table top.
Disposed at intervals inv a series concentric,
withthe stem 11 vor the axial center ot' the supporting :trame are the equalizing devices consisting in the construction shown in Fig-` ures 1 and l ot cylinders or dash pots 25 in' which operate pistons 26 of which the rods*` 27 are pivotaliy connected as at 28 to the under surtace of the table top, the lower ends oi' the cylinders or dash pots being universally mounted as by ball and socket joints 29 upon the legs or standards .of the trame work and being provided with vents 30 fitted with regulating valves 31 to modify the freedom of the passage of air vthrough the vents due to the downward and upward movement of the pistons incidental to the movement of the supporting traine with relation to the horizontallymaintained table top 10. These equalizing means ot' which a plurality should be provided with each apparatus, tend to relieve the jars incident to the sudden movements of the support-ing traine with relation to the table top and permit the latter to be maintained in a substantially uniform horizontal position `without the vibration or swinging movement which would be incl'- ,dental otherwise to the impulses imparted to 1n the modied construction iilustrated'in Figures 5 and 6 the table top 32 is attached also having a counter-balancing weight 34;
'and a ball 36 which ismounted in a spherical socket 37 supported by or forming a part or the disk 38 upheld by the legs or standards 39 which are braced lasl indicated at 40. The stem with itsbearing ball and to a plate atthe upper end of a stem 34 attaching plate 33 is preferably of single piece construction, as in the form illustrated in Figure l, and the equalizing devices emk ployed in connection With the form shown in Figures and 6 consists of bars 4:1 sup` ported by cushioning springs i2 and traversed by Wings 43 depending from the table top and having a pivotal or rocking mounting thereon as shown at 44, the intermediate portions of said Wings forming run ners 45 having a tongue and groove engagement With the bars l so as to compensate for the angular relative movement in any direction of the table top and supporting frame and serve to prevent the swinging or prolonged vibratory movement of the table top due to the :movement of the surface by which the frame of the structure is supported.
