IMPROVEMENT IN STUDS AND BUTTONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,598, dated November 18, 1873 application filed March 24, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK E. BROWN, of Pawtuoket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvement in Studs and Buttons, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my said invention is to provide a fastening for buttons and studs which will securely hold said buttons and studs in their places, which may be made at small expense, and which will at the same time permit said studs and buttons to be easily affixed in or to, and to be as easily removed from or out of, the clothing or other articles in or with which they may be used. Said invention consists of a hook-shaped fastening connected with the stud or button by the shank, and having the part of said fastening that is opposite said shank peculiarly widened, curved, and perforated, as hereinafter set forth.

The accompanying drawing is hereby made a part of this specification, and the indicating letters refer to the same parts whenever repeated.

A shows the upper surface or top of said button or stud. B is the shank thereof. 0 exhibits a crooked end of said fastening, which crook is so made as to form a durable spring for the remainder of the fastening. d is a widened surface in said fastening opposite the end-of the shank B. c is a curve in said widened surface d. f is the end of said fastening, or the terminating-point thereof, curved upward toward the button or stud, as shown. g is the slot or perforation in the widened surface d.

The said hook-shaped fastening may be made of gold, electroplated wire, or other suitable material, and is connected or secured to the stud or button by the shank B in any ordinary wa The widened or flattened surface at is slightly curved upward toward the stud or button, and around the end of the shank B, as indicated by the letter a. This widened and curved surface contains the perforation or slot 9, which is to be of such shape and size that the end of the shank will readily and naturally sink into it. The sinking of the end of the shank B into the slot or perforation g in the manner substantially as indicated, aided by the spring in the curved end 0 and the upward curve of the end f, will effectually prevent the edges of the eyelet-hole from workin g between the end of the shank and the part at of said fastening. This result being obtained, it will, of course, be impossible for the stud or button to work loose or fall out of the articles in or with which it is worn or used.

My said invention is intended to be applied to and used with shirt-studs, sleeve-buttons, and other like articles,and also to any and every kind of stud or button with which a selffastener may be required or'desired.

In using studs or buttons to which said invention has been attached, the end F is inserted in the eyelet-hole, the end of the shank is raised out of the slot g, and the fastener pushed along to the crooked end 0, and this end 0 having passed into said eyelethole, the fastener is pushed backward until the shank B stands squarely in said eyelet-hole, and the end of said shank returns into the slot or perforation aforesaid. By simply reversing this operation the stud or button is easily and quickly removed from and out of said eyelethole.

I claim as my invent-ion and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A hook-shaped fastening for studs and buttons, containing the double spring formed by the parts (1 and f, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. The part D, provided with the, slot G, into which the end of the shank 'inay sink, constructed in the manner and used for the purposes substantially as set forth.
