UNITED STATES PATENT; OFFICE.
HOWARD H. GRAT Z, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAWN-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,533, dated NLVGlllbLI 11, 1873; application filed June 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD H. GRATZ, of Lexington, in the county of Fayette and in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Seat; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a lawn or outdoor bench, which has a back hinged to it in such a manner that it will turn down over the seat and protect it from the weather, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View, showing the seat-back open; and Fig. 2 is a side View, showing the same open.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents an ordinary lawn-bench, the seat of which is made of slats, or in any of the known and usual ways. B represents the back of the bench. This back is made solid or close, so that when turned down to cover the seat, it will protect said seat from water, or snow, or ice, or dirt of any kind. The seat-back is made somewhat wider than the seat itself, and is hinged to the seat by means of the J-shaped metal pieces 0, so that when open the lower edge of the back extends slightly below the seat-slats, andwhen closed projects sufficiently far rearward to thoroughly cover the rear of the seat. The back is connected at each end with the seat by jointed braces d d. It is evident that, by this construction of bench, the seat may always be protected from the weather and kept dry and clean.
I am aware that a seat-back, hinged to the seat, and connected thereto by jointed braces, is not new; hence, I disclaim such as being, broadly, my invention. f
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the seat A, solid back B, made wider than the seat, and connected thereto by the J -s'haped hinges c, and the jointed braces d d, all as and for the purposes herein set 'forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of May, 1873. I y
