` intens VALVE-SAPRNG LIFTER.
Application iiled July 22, i
To all 'wiz-0m t may concern.'
Be it known that l, DAvin E. Garrison7 a citizen or" the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county ot Knox and State of llinois, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Valve-Spring Lifters, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to tools of the movable jaw type and an object of the invention is to provide a tool which is particularly adapted for use in lifting springs such as used upon the valves of internal combustion engines, the said tool being designed to easily compress or lii't the springs of valve stems to permit the ready and easy removal of the valves associated therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool wherein the leverage of the respective movable jaws is designed to permit the raising or compressing of the valve springs with a minimum effort.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved valve spring lifter or compressor showing it in its closed position in solid lines and its open or valve spring compressing position in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the improved tool.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the improved tool comprises handles 1 and 2 each of which comprises a relatively long hand grip portion 3 and a relatively short jaw carrying portion 4- which extends at an acute angle to the hand grip portion 3 so that when the hand grip portions 3 are spread as shown in solid lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing the i aw carrying portions 4 will lie substantially in parallelism, the same being true of the hand grip portions 3 when the jaw carrying portions 4; are spread as' shown in dotted lines in Fig. Al o't'the drawing.
The handles l and 2 are connected at the junction of the portions and 4 by links 5 which are attached to the opposite sides of the handles as shown in Fig. 1 ogt the -drawing. The facing sides of the handles' at their point of connection, are concavely cutout and receive therein a roller 6 which is rotatably supported on a suitable pin 7 carried by the plates 5 permitting the :tree unimpeded pivotal movement of the handles.
i921.- seiiai No. 486,524. f
vThe jaw carrying portions 4 have the arms 8 pivotally connected to their outer ends as shown at 9 and the jaw arms 8 each f have transversely extending extensions 10 formed thereon which engage upon opposite sides of the portions 4. The jaws proper 1l are flat and formed integrally with the arms 8, and are bent so that they will always lie parallel one to the other and move either towards or away from each other in straight lines and in parallel relation. The said movement is accomplished through the medium of the arms 8 and links 12 which are pivotally connected to the arms 8 and to the hand grip'portions 3 of the handles 1 and 2. The hand grip portions 3 are provided with a plurality of spaced openings 13 any f one of which in each handle is adapted to receive the pivot pins 14C' of the links 12 to permit adjustable connection of the links 12 with the handles 1 and 2 and consequently adjustment of the relation of the jaws 11 and arms 8 relative to the handles. The jaws 11 are provided with cutout portions 15 adapted to engage about a valve stem to permit proper engagement of a valve spring to be lifted or compressed. j
By' reference tothe drawing it will be noted that the links 12 are connected to the hand grip portions of the handles 1 and 2 most remote 'from the arms 8 to which they are connected.
t is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed v in .various other manners and the parts associated in dilierent relations and, therefore, I do' not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a valve spring lifter, a pair of liandles which con'iprise hand grip portions and jaw carivingportions extending at acute angles to the hand grip portions, links connecting said handles, said handles being rer-essed adjacent their points of connection, a
rollei` engaging in said recesses, vand jaws carried by said handles. A 2. In a valve spring lifteixa pair oi' handles which com )rise hand 'ri n )ortions and n 3 a jaw carrying portions extending at acute angles to the hand grip portions, links connecting said handles, said handles being recessed adjacent their points of connection, a roller engaging in said recesses, jaw arms ll t d to l h pivota y connec e said andles, jaws formed thereon, and links pivotally conneetportions7 jaws pivotally connected to the ed to said arms, and said handles whereby outer ends ot said jew carrying portions, said jaws will always move in parallel relaarms on seid jaws and extending beyond the tion upon movement of seid handles. connection of said handles, and links pivotn 3. In a Valve spring lifter, a pair ol han ally connected to seidA arins and pivotally dles, each comprising a hand grip portion and adjustaloly Connected to seid hand grip and a jew carrying portion extending at an portions. icute angle to the hand grip portion, ineens In testimony whereof I affix my signature. pvotally connecting seid handles at the l0 junction of said hand grip and jaw carrying DAVID E.
