ROTAT, OF LYQN. FRANCE.
Application filed January 18, 1921.
Be it known that I. PIERRE ll-oiwr, a citi zen o l the French Republic, oi Lyon. France. have invented a certain new and useitul Device for Regulating: the Adjustment of Tools on llihichine 'lools. of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a device for ulziting the adjustment of tools tools.
To obta n. exact regulation of tools on machine tools one is often obliged to wedge up these tools at certain points by means of one or more pieces or shavings oi metal of a" kind. and these pieces are selected of a thickness suitable to eventually obtain the total thicknes desired. These regulations occur freq .tly in workshops and cause very appreciable loss of labour.
The present invention comprises a device which permits of obtaining instantly the heightot wedgine' necessary long as this height is within the limits found in the constructi on of the device. 7
The device consists of a cylindrical pin to which are connected several flat elements of different thicknesses, each comprising on one of their sides a lug constructed of thin sheet metaL and provided at its end with a circular hole through which a which forms a connecting rod, and also forms an axis round which the flat elements are freely articulated.
The axial pin comprises a head it each end in order to retain the elements. The
regon machine thickness of each of the elements constitub.
ing the block and the number of said elements are calculated according to the total thickness that may be required.
The annexed drawing shows by way of example a form of construction of the inventionz- Fig. 1 is a view in section of a. block com prising five elements superposed normally.
Fig. 2 is a plan view. T io. 3 is a viewin section of the same block of which the two extreme elements are superposed. whilst the three others have been turned round the axle pin to take an opposite position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view position of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a further view in section of the same block showing the second and the fourth elements superposed. and the others in. the opposed position.
of the device in the pin passes freely,

l igr, 6 illustrate he application o'l dc *ice to u tool-helm of a lathe.
The block illustriiieijl comprises elements a. 71 r. r/ (,2 having similar sui, ices and shapes but having? diiicreut tliiclmes cs. ltech element con'iprises a lug toro'ied of a very thin metal sheet. one of the ends of which sunk flush in a recess in the corresponding, block element and fixed by welding. riveting or other means. the shapes oi": the various lugs 7, it 77. j, 71: being alike. projectliig ends o'l these lugs are provided with round holes which are somewhat larger than the diameter of pin K which connects them so that they can assume a certain obliquity to said pin when the position, shown in Fin. 3 with re"ereuce to the block elements 7), (r. d.
The block elements are retained on the pin [by the heads Z. Z of the latter. the head Z being; formed after said members have been placed in position.
The pin 1 also carries :2 link plate u for the attachment of a chain 227" tor supporting the device when not in use.
The superposition of the block elements is made in their order of thickness, as shown in Fig. 1, and the thinnest element 6 at the top has its lug It at its upper surface so as to abut under the head Z, whilst the remaining elements have their lugs at their lower surfaces, the lowest lug g shutting against the head Z. This particular arrangement of the elements and the position of their claws is a feature of the invention. as it alone allows all the possible combinations of any of the five elements without those elements not in use being in the way.
By way of example. Fig. 3 shows the ore treme elements a and c in use, which are brought into intimate contact and form a block for the tool 7 placed inthe tool holder 10. The three elements 6, 0, (Z not in use are turned around so as to be opposite to those in use. and however much their total thickness exceeds the space between the lugs g and 7c of the elements in use, they will assume a fan shaped position as shown in Fig. 3, owing to the thinness of the lugs and the sizes of the holes of the same embracing the pin Z.
Fig. 5 shows the elements 6 and d in use and the position assumed by the remaining elements a, c, e.
6 shows a tool f in the tool holder 32, the block elements employed being 0, 03
ill he ill c; the elements not in use are not visible the figure being a cross section.
-t can he understood that to obtain various thicknesses oi blocks in regular mathemati cal progression, the elements can he calculated and combined accordingly. For examples with five elements it the element as 4t millimetres thick, 3 millimetres c 2 millimetres (Z l millimetre and e 3; mini ,ietr e the total thickness would he 10 millimetres and a half, and all intermediary thicknesses could he obtained by in. prw gressionsv The number of elements could he greater or less than five and the shape of same may vary as required.
What claim my invention and desire to secure hv Letters Patent ot the United States is 1. Device for regulatingthe adjustment of tools on machine tools, comprising a series m superposed fiat elements a fiat lug; provided with an orifice fixed on one side of each element each lug being thinner than the Wedge element to which it is fixed, a pin projecting through the orifices of said lugs withfree play, and heads on each end of said pin to retain said lugs and said elements on said pin.
2. Device for regulating the adjustment of tools on machine tools, comprising a series of superposed fiat elements of diilerent thicknesses, atlat lug provided with an; orifice fixed on one side of each element, the one surface LMAABI of a hip; being; flush with the one surface of? an elementeach lug being thinner than the respective Wedge element to which it is fixed. apin projecting through the orifices o'F said lugs with tree play, and heads on each end of said pin to retain said lugs and said elements on said pin.
Device for regulating: the adjustment oi: the tools on machine tools, comprising a. series ot superposed fiat metal elements of s milar shape and. having different thicknesses, the thinnest element hein at the top of the series and the thicknesses or" the remaining elements being; increased for each successive element towards the bottom ele menta flat lug: tormed of very thin plate metal, and provided with a round orifice fixed on one side of each of said elements, the top surface of the lug" attached to the topmost element of the series being flush with said top surface and the under surtaces of the remainino; lugs being; flush with the bottom surfaces o1 their respective elements, pin of round section extending through the orifices of said lugs. the diameter of the pin. being substantially smaller than the diameters oi said orifices and heads on the ends of said pin.
In Witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
