At the same time the loosely mounted deflector, which is normally maintained in spring pressed engagement with the platen as herelnafter described, will be freed and will drop down at'its forward portion away from the platen, providing an opening or passageway for the paper introduced at the front. The terminal rollers 58 are releaslable at will by devices comprising crank arms 76 fiXed to the shaft 48 and having studs 78 overlying the outer arms 56 and adapted toswing said arms on the shaft 48 to overcome the springs 59 and release the rollers 58. At their outer ends the carrier arms are perforated to provide bearings for pintles 105 and pressure rollers 106. These-*pressure rollers may be of metal and are forward or out of line with the main and terminal rollers which are in line with each other. Said rollers 106 are adapted'to co-operate with the platen 20 at its front lower side below the printing line, protruding through narrow slots or openings 107 in the front portion of the deflector 40. The side edges of the deflector outside the openings 107 rest on the free ends of the carrier arms 103, the swinging deflector 40 being thus supported by the carriers. The pressure rollers 106 are constantly urged towards the platen by springs 108 that are coiled around the rock shaft 102. There is one of these springs arranged close to and inside of each of the hubs 104, one end of the spring bearing in a hole in the collar and the other end abutting againstthe front face of the part 16 of the bridge-piece. Collars 109 secured by set screws l110y to -the rock shaft 102 prevent displacement of the springs in respect to the hubs 104 and also prevent unduemovement-of the c arrier arms 103 of each pair towards each other. The rear end portion ofthe link 119 is somewhat higherthan the front portion, to which it is joined by a curved or odset part, and is pivotally connected at 121`with the free outer end of an upstanding crank arm 122 provided with a hub 123 which fits over a stub rock shaft l124 and is secured thereto by a set screw 125. rear of the bridge-piece and its left-hand end lbears rotatably in an ear 17| projecting -rearward from the left-hand end of sairl bridgeiece. Rocking motion is communicated to the stub shaft from` the hollow rock shaft or sleeve 43 by means of a crank arm 127 on the righthand end portion of the stub shaft which projects beyond the lug 19. Said crank arm extendsupward and'its. free end is formed with aslot 128 which is loosely engaged by a pin 129 that'projects laterally lrightward from the left-hand arm 49. y

The movement of said shaft 102 in turn will be transmitted through the crank arms 111 and pins 114 to the carrier-arms 103, which will be swung forward, overcoming the springs. 108 and throwing the rollers 106 to the released position in respect to the platen. 1t will be understood that the springs 53 will, through the described train of connections, affect the pressurerollers .106 to some extent during this restoring operation.
On the other hand, when the plate-like arm 65 is acted on by the cam 69, the sleeve 43 will turn independently of the shaft" 48, releasing the pressure rollers 523vithout affecting the terminal rollers 58. During this releasing operation the actuating pin 129 will operate as before through the train of connections comprising the crank arm 127rock shaft 124, cra-nk arm 122, link 119, crank arm 115, rock shaft 102 and crank arms 111, to swing the carrier arms 108 and throw off the rollers 106 simultaneously with the rollers' 52. The parts i when in the released position just described are illustrated in Fig. 3. The restoration of the parts to 4normal position will be effected automatically when -the arm 65 is released from the control pf the cam 69 by a suitable movement of the carriage.
The mechanism herein described is adapted for use with various forms` or styles of commercial typewriting, although in. its` present form it was more particularly designed for the writing of tax bills and records thereof. In using it for such work vthe operator first presses the release key 85 rearward, releasing all the feed rollers. 'The record sheet 95 and carbon sheet 96 are then introduced together at the rear of the machine over the paper table, vproperly positioned against the side guide 39, and are passed downwardly around and under the platen and over the deflector 40, being advaneed above the printing line and' int-roduced under the pressure bail. The release key 85 is then returned to normal position, resulting in the return of all the pressure rollers into co-operative engagement with the platen. The carriage is then released from the escapernent devices, as by a release key or through a tabulating operation, and permitted to move towards the left, bringing the arm into engagement with the cam 69, releasing the main feed-roller-52, the supplemental pressure rollers 106 and the deflector 40, but independently ofthe terthe narrow sheet or sheets 94 from the front of the machine, guiding said sheet or sheets agalnst the gage 92. Said sheets are front the rolls 88, and thence downward between the platen and the supplemental rollers 106, being slid rearward over the deflector 40 and passing between the mainl feed roller 52 and the platen, the side edges of said sheet or sheets of course clearing the terminal rollers. The end of the sheet or sheets will 'be arrested against the end stop 36e. The operator then restores the carriage fro'm left to right, the main and supplemental feed rollers and the 'deflector engaging with the sheet or sheets 94, which will thus be controlled in superposedrelationship with the record sheet and in position to receive the line of writing. Assuming -that as usual each narrow sheet or taxbill 94 receives but a single line, the carriage will be released whenthe end ofthis line has been writtenycausing the arm 65 to co-'ope'rate with the cam 69, thus releasing the written sheet or sheets 94, which may then be removed and substituted by another sheet which willl undergo the manipulations hereinbefore described. In restoring the carriage from left to right the usual line spacing'handle will be operated, first to space the record sheet prior to the restoration of the` main feed roller into engagement with the platen so that the line spacing operationfdoes not affect the newly ladjusted narrow sheet but only the underlying wide record sheet. This underlying sheet ofcourse receives the typJev impressions through the carbon .paper 96, slmultaneously with the writing of thenarrow sheet. Y
As has been'stated, the tax bills usually comprise a plurality of folds withv inter-l leaved carbons, making a thick packet and` my present improvement has been found in practice greatly to facilitate the control ofthe printing portion of such a packet maintaining the portion of this packet opposite the printing line in proper condition mechanism disclosed in my aforesaid 'prior 'Patent No. 1,100,442. f
Various' lchanges may be made without departing from my invention. For example,
it may bef found necessary positively toucom nect thelpressure rolls 106 with .the vplaten 20 lto insure proper feeding of the paper. 1.30
fed over the guide rod 97 and forward of ies shaft at its left-hand end a small toothed wheel or pinion 131 which constantly intermeshes with a toothed wheel 132 which is fixed to the left-hand end of the platen axle 21. The shaft 130v may be supported near its outer ends by additional hanger arms 138. By this construction the pressurerolls will always be caused to turn by rotary movements communicated to the platen.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a typewriting machine, the combi-A nation of a traveling platen, a releasable paper feed roller mounted on a sleeve, a second paper feed roller in line with said first roller and mounted on a shaft, a third feed roller mounted on another shaft and arranged forward of the first two feedrollers, an arm on said sleeve, means for automatically actuating said arm during the travel of the platen, connections between both of said shafts and said sleeve, and means operative by hand to release said second and third feed rollers.
2. In a typewriting machine, the coInbination of a traveling platen, a releasable paper feed roller mounted on a sleeve, a second paper feed roller in line with said first roller mounted on a shaft, a third feed roller mounted on another shaft and arranged forward of the first two feed rollers, an arm on said sleeve, means for automatically actuating said arm during the travel of the platen, hand controlled means for actuating the first recited shaft to release said second feed roller, and connections between bot-h of said shafts and said sleeve, said connections being fully operative by said hand controlled means but said cam being ineffective on said first recited roller.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, two paper feed rollers arranged side by side, a third feed roller arranged out of line with said first two feed rollers, shafts supporting said feed rollers.
4. Ina typewriting machine, they combination of a traveling platen` two paper feed `rollers arranged side by side, a third feed 'roller arranged out of line with saidfirst two feed rollers, shafts supporting said feed rollers, connections between said shafts, means `connected to one of said shafts to release all of said feed rollers simultaneously, and means operative by another of said shafts to release two of said feed 4rollers onlv. v v
5. In a typewriting machine, the combina,
tion of a platen, terminal feed rollers, an intermediate feed roller, a third feed roller forward of said intermediate feed roller,
means for simultaneously releasing all of said feed rollers., and means operative automaticallyand independently of said terminal feed rollers to release the other two feed rollers.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combi` n ation of a platen, terminal feed rollers, an intermediate feed roller, a third feed roller forward of said intermediatefeed roller, means for simultaneously releasing all of said feed rollers, and means operative during traveling movements of the carriage to release said intermediate feed roller and said third feed roller while the terminal feed rollers remain in co-operative engagement with the platen. f

8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a hand controlled rock sha-ft, a sleeve surrounding the, same, a connection forturning said sleeve from said rock sha-ft, a second rock shaft connected to` said sleeve, feed rollers supported by said first named rock shaft and by said sleeve, crank arms on said second rock shaft, a feed roller supf ported by said crank arms, a deflector supi ported by said crank arms. and means effective to release all of said feed rollers and also saidA defiector. t Y
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a hand controlled roc shaft, a sleeve surrounding the same, a connectionfor turning said sleeve from said rock shaft, a second rock shaft, a crank arm thereon, a crank arm on said sleeve, devices connecting saidcrank arms, paper feed rollers on said rock shafts, and feed roller releasing devices acting on said first recited rock shaft.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a rock shaft, 'a main feed roller sup-t' ported thereon, a second rock shaft, a supplemental feed roller supported thereon, connections between said rock shafts comprising a third or intermediate rock shaft provided with crank arms, one connected to the first recited rock shaft and one to the second recited rock shaft, and releasing devices operative on said first recited rock shaft to release both feed rollers. .f

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main feed roller, a rock shaft supporting the same, a crank arm on said shaft, a supplemental feed roller, a second rock shaft supporting said supplemental feed roller, a second crank Aarm on said second shaft, anV intermediate rock shaft, a crank arm thereon loosely connected tosaid first recited crank arm, another crank arm on said intermediate rock shaft and connected by a link With said ,second crank arm, and releasing means operative on said first recited rock shaft to release -both saidfeed rollers. 12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a main feedroller, a
supplemental feed roller comprising two sections; and means for controlling said supplemental feed roller comprising a rock shaft, spring pressed 4crank arms loosely mounted on said rock shaft, and operative crank arms fixed to said rock shaft and loosely connected to said spring pressed crank arms.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combinationl of a platen; a main -feed roller; a-
supportingV shaft therefor; a supplemental feed roller comprising two sections; means for controlling said supplemental feed roller comprising a rock shaft, spring pressed crank arms loosely mounted on said rock shaft, and operative crank arms fixed to said rock shaft and loosely connected to said spring pressed crank arms; connections between said two shafts; and releasing means acting directly on one of said shafts.

In a typewriting machine, the combibination of a platen; a rock shaft; a main feed roller supported thereon; a Suppplemental feed roller comprising two sections; means for controlling said supplemental feed vroller comprising a rock shaft, spring pressed crank arms loosely mounted on said rock shaft, and operative crank arms fixed to said rockshaft and loosely connected to said'` spring pressed crank arms; and con# nections between the rock shaft supporting the main vand supplemental feed rollers, said connections comprising a third rock shaft connected at one end to the supporting rock shaft of the main feed roller, said third rock shaft at its opposite end being connected to the rock shaft supporting the supp-lemental feed-roller.
