ROBERT BLANK, or COLUMBUS, OHIO, AssIGNOR To soLAR-s'IIIRGEs MFG. oo n CORPORATION or ILLINOIS.
FIREPROOF WASTECAN.
Application filed July 14:, 1921.
reproof waste cans, such as garbage cans and the like intended for general application in commercial and home use, my object being the provision of a can which will be automatically maintained in a closed condition under ordinary circumstances. My
present construction proposes an arrange-l ment in which the specially formed cover of the can has door openings and freely swinging doors therein whose controlling connections, rigid with the doors, are hinged to the cover and so formed as to act by gravity to close the doors and maintain them yieldingly in closed position.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating my present invention and forming a part of this speciiication,
Figure 1 is a side view of the complete can,
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the upper portion of the can, including its cover, and showing the doors closed,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the cover removed, and
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing one of the doors in open position.
Referring now to these figures my invention is utilized in connection with a can bodyl 10 which is preferably of the cylindrical form shown, with an upper open end and an upper reinforced edge 11 telescopingly engaged by the lower outwardly offset fla-nge 12 of the cover 13 which is preferably of the semi-globular form shown and has an upper outwardly pressed integral cap portion 14 presenting an annular rim or sur` face provided with brackets 15.
The can as a whole may be handled either by side handles 16 of the body as seen in Figure 1 or by providing a bail 17, and the cover 13 has diametrically opposed door openings 18 with its edges above and below the openings reinforced as shown at 19 to Serial No. 484,724.
receive the flanged upper and lower edges 20 of doors 21 which are preferably curved to conform to the curvature of the cover wall. Each of these doors 21 is disposed within the cover and freely movable toward and away from its respective vdoor opening, upon levers 22 of approximately the U-shape shown, rigidly attached at one end at 23 to the doors and pivotally connected at their opposite ends at 24 to thebraokets 15. These levers are disposed in offset relation so that both doors can be swung inwardly at the same time if so desired, and each lever has an intermediate enlargement 25 forming a weight and thus capa-ble of action by gravity to hold the doors in closed posititon.
Thus it is obvious that inintroducing materialwithin the can it is simply necessary to press one or both of the doors inwardly to the open position shown for instance in Figure 4i, the doors swinging bodily away from the door opening so that maximum space is afforded during this operation. Immediately upon release of the doors, their weighted levers operate by gravity to swing the doors to closed positions adjacent to the door openings so that between operations the doors will be effectively held in the closed position and, without attention on thev part of the operator, the can will be maintained in fireproof Vcondition in so far as communi` cation of flame to or from the contents thereof is concerned.
I claim:
1. A container comprising in combination a body open at its upper end; a cover mounted on said body and having a lateral opening; a` lever pivoted to the cover within the same at a point remote from said opening; and a door rigidly mounted on said lever guided thereby and bodily shiftable within said cover toward and away from said opening.
2. A container comprising in combination a body open at its upper end; a cover mounted on said body and having a lateral opening; 'a weighted lever pivoted to the cover within the same at a point remote from said opning; and a door rigidly mounted on said lever, guided and urged closed thereby, and bodily shiftab-le within said cover toward and away from said opening. v
y 3. A container comprising in combination a body open at its upper end; a. cover mounted on said body and having opposed lateral openings; Weighted levers pivoted to the Cover Within the same in Offset- Ielation to each others and at points ieinote 'i'oin the respective openings; and doors for closing seid openings each rigidly mounted on acorrespending lever, guided Lund urged closed thereby.y and each bodily shiftaoie independently of the other Within Said Cover toward 10 and away from the ooiiesponding opening'. In testimony whereof l have aiixed my signature. t
ROBERT BLAN.
