Secured to the shaft 7 is a clutch member 26 which is formed with clutch faces 27 and 28 respectively, which clutch faces are designed to cooperate with the clutch faces 29 formed on the pulleys 30 and 31 respectively. These pulleys 30 and 31 are loosely mounted on the shaft 7 and are normally urged towards the clutch member 26 as by means of the coiled springs 82 and 33 respectively.
Extending above the shaft 7 and supported by the posts 5 is a frame 34 that has an upper bar 35 to which the brackets 36 are secured, the brackets providing supports for the pivot pins 37 that pass through the operating arms 38 and 39 respectively. As shown these arms extend inwardly, and are of lengths to overlie the central portion of a road closed by the gate, to permit an operator to readily grasp the arms to accomplish the operation thereof.
Each of the pulleys is divided as by means of a circular partitioning member 40,
thereby providing a pair of chain engaging surfaces on each ulley. A chain ll is con-' nected to one en of the arm 38 and has a portion thereof wound on one of the pulleys, the opposite end of the chain being secured to the pulley so that when the arm 38 is moved, the pulley will be rotated in one direction. A chain 42 has one end secured to the pulley associated therewith and has its opposite end connected to the coiled spring 43 that is secured to the upper bar of the frame 84:.
A chain 44: has one end thereof secured to the arm 39, the opposite end thereof being secured to the pulley associated there with, while the chain 45 which is also secured to the pulley associated therewith, has one endsecured to the spring member 4:6. Pivotally connected to each of the arms is a clutch arm 47 which is formed with an elongated opening to accommodate the shaft 7 and permit the clutch arm to move at right angles with respect thereto. At the lower end of each of these clutch arms are inwardly extended camming flanges 48, which flanges lie be tween the clutch member 26 and pulleys supported on the shaft 7. Thus it will be seen that as the arms 38 and 39 are moved downwardly, the camming flanges are moved out of contact with the clutch member 26 permitting the coiled spring associated therewith to force the clutch face of the pulley into engagement with the clutch face of the clutch member 26, that lies adjacent to the pulley being operated to lock the pulley to the shaft 7 and cause rotation of the shaft.
As the shaft 7 rotates the pinion 8 also rotates, which in turn transmits rotary motion to the pinion 9 in a manner as heretofore described.
It is believed that in view of the foregoing, a further detailed description of the device is unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination with a swinging gate, an operating mechanism including, a horizontal shaft, pulleys loosely mounted on shaft, a clutch member secured to the shaft, said clutch member having clutch faces, pulleys loosely mounted on the shaft and having clutch faces, clutch arms, operating arms supporting the clutch arms, said clutch arms adapted to move between the pulleys and clutch member to normally hold the pulleys out of engagement with the clutch member, said clutch arms adapted to move to clutch the pulleys to the shaft, and means for transmitting rotary movement of the shaft to the gate.
2. In combination with, a swinging'gate, an operating mechanism including a shaft, pulleys loosely mounted on the shaft, a clutch member on the shaft carrying clutch faces, pulleys loosely mounted on the shaft and having clutch faces, spring members on the shaft for normally urging the pulleys to the clutch members, operating arms for operating the pulleys, means carried by the operating arms and movable between the pulleys and clutch member for urging the clutch faces outof engagement, and means for transmitting movement of the shaft to the gate.
