Be it known that EDGAR M, WnJsoN, a citizen of the United States oli America, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, has invented new and useful Improvements in Bed Canopies. of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a removable and adjustable bed canopy for use primarily in connection with invalid or hospital beds as a means of protection against flies. mosquitoes and other insects, and especially to provide a structure of the type and for tlIGJQUI'POSG indicated whereby access to any desired portion of the enclosure may be afforded without the displacement or removal of adjacent portions of the screen and whereby the entire structure when not required may be folded into compact form. for storage or transportation; and with these objects in view the lnventlon conslsts in a construction and combination of parts. of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the ELC'.

The device is constructed as a unit sepa rate from and optionally applicable to a bedstead of conventional form havingthe head and foot boards 10 and 11 and the side bars 12 connecting the same, and embodies primarily head and foot transverse supporting bars 13 and longitudinal side bars 14 terminally supported by the end bars and detachable therefrom, and a longitudinal series of transverse canopy sections each comprising a plurality of foldably (prefen ably hingedly) connected screen elements 15 adapted to form top and side walls for transversely arching the bedstead or the mattress supported thereby, with the free ends of the sections seated respectively upon the side bars 14:.

In the illustrated embodiment of the in vention the end bars 13 are provided with terminal stirrups 16 each provided'with reversely disposed seats 17 and 18 for respectively engaging the side rails of the bedstead frame and receiving the side bars of the canopy frame, and both end and side i bars 13 and 1e are provided in their upper sides with grooves or channels 13 and 14 for the receptionof the adjacent lower edges of the screen elements, so that an efficient joint may be formed therebetween. The head and foot walls 19 of the canopy are represented by foldably connected screen sections 19 and 19 hingedly connected at 19 for folding into parallel relation when detached and serving as the terminal supports for the ridge pole 2Ov which is provided with terminal clips Qlto engage over the upper edges ofsaid head and foot walls. Eachtransverse series of screen elements, consisting-of a suitable frame 15 and a filler of wire cloth 15 or the equivalent thereof, is hingedly connected asat 15 with the adjoining element of the series, with two of said elementsfforming the top' and two forming the side walls oi the structure so as to provide for foldinguinto relatively compact form, while the several transverse serles of screen elements are. connected together to provide against longitudinal displacementby fasteningYmea-ns such as hooks 21 engaging staples 22, and correspondingly the :tree edges of the terminal transverse series are connected. by corresponding fastening devices 23 with the end walls 19, so that whilethe terminal or any desired number of elements or units of each transverse series may .be displacedto give access to that portion of the interior of the structure as may be required, the engagement of the fastening means provides for bolding the several elements or units in compact relation to constitute an. unbroken protee tion for the occupant of the structure.

The side and end bars also preferably carry inwardlyextended screen flaps 2% and 25 which project under the mattress (not shown) to cover the intervalbetween the edges of the mattress and thesaid bars to prevent access of insects therethrough, and the side bars are preferably jointed as indicated at 26 at an intermediate point to permit of folding into relatively compact form. v
