To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, HARRY K. iiwnivm', acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Alcova, in the'county of Natrona and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Culverts; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and concise description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.

Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, my improved culvert comprises a plurality of sections generally indicated by the numeral 1, these sections being'tormed of plastic material,
such as concrete or the like and being of a a of these sections v1 are open and adapted to receive therein bottom or base sections indicated at 2, said bottom sections being formed ofmaterial corresponding to that employed in construction of the body portions of the conduit sections 1 and having the upper portions of the opposite sides thereof beveled or flared outwardly as at; 3, whereby to provide a substantially wedge like engagement as betweenthe bottom sections 2 and the lower open portions of the culvert sections 1. In order that the various sections 1 can be secured in their longitudinally juxtaposed relation, shown in the Figure 1, laterally extending lips 4 are formed upon the upper portions of certain of the ends of each of the same and are adapted to be snugly engaged in seats formed in the ad jacent end of the opposite section thusproviding inter-connection as between the juxtaposed sections whereby with the arrangement of a binding material between the same, such as mortar or the like, the culvert sections will be securely locked In this connection,iit is of course to be understoodthat the adjacent ends of the various bottoms'2 abut each other and infthis way, afiord a fluid tight connection with the arrangement of suitable binding material between the same. I
Through the connection of the lips 4t arranged upon certain of the 'ends of the conduit or culvert sections in their respective seats provided upoirthe adjacent ends ot the corresponding sections, it will. be understood that relative lateral movement between the conduit sections will be prevented. To prevent relative longitudinal movement between saidsections' and therefore, to retaintheir inter-engaging portions in snug relation at'all times,1 may and preferably do form upon the extremitiesot' said lips 41, dove tail connections 4, which, as shown inthe Figure 3 are adapted to be'engaged in correspondingly formed seats cut or otherwise presented in the rear walls of tions 5 having the ldwer portions of the sidewalls thereof formed with beveled seats .6 upon their inner faces and adapted to snngly receive bottom or base sections 7, the ppos te sid no t o sqit w i h a beveled or flattenedoutwardly as indicated at,8,thns providing a wedge like connection between sides ot' the bottom port-ionsand the respective bases or bottom therefor;

Due to the wedge like seating of the bottom or base portions 2 and '7 in their respectiveculvert'body sections, it will be understcod that expansion or contraction'of said body portions will be permitted with relation to the bottoms or bases, which elements, by reason of their wedge like or a djustable engagement in the open portions of their respective culvert body portions will be permitted to automatically adjust themselves to compensate for such expansion or contraction. 'Furthermore, by ,reason of the wedge like seating of these hot,- toms or bases in the lower open portions of the culvert sections, it will be understood that fluid tight connection as between the same and their respective culvert sections will be afforded, thus allowing the culvert to beiemployed with maximum results.
As means for preventing relative longitudinal shiftingor like movement between the ,oonduitor cnlvert sections, 1 may and preferably do form upon the extended ends of the several lips 9, dovetail-like extensions 9, thi as shown in the Figure 6, being located intermediate the opposite sides of said lips or extensions and being adapted to snugly engage the correspondiile y 2. arranged in the ward walls of the portion 11 adapted to receive the extensions-.9 therein.

A culvert comprising a plurality of longitudinally juxtaposed sections each being substantially rectangular in cross section and having their lower portions open forming a top and side walls, several seats formed with the lower ,end and projecting inwardly of said side walls, closures for said open lower portion ofthesections, the opposite sides of said closures heiiigbeveled and adapted to adjnstably engage the several seats, longitudinally disposed lips formed upon cer'tainof the ends of said closure andtop wall of said sections adapted to have snug reception in correspondingly formed seats formed in thevoppositecnds of the same whereby ,to inter-connect the same and to prevent relative lateral mova nent therebetween and means adapted to inter-connect saidv closures and top Walls of said sections whereby to prevent relative longitudinal movement .therehetween.
