To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Ii, W'JLLIAM L. Knnnoee, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tank-Car Anchors,'0f which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tank car anchors.
The object of the invention is to provide simple means for detachably yet rigidly anchoring the tank of a tank car to the car underframe and more specifically, to provide a strong and durable anchor of the type indicated wherein are employed wedgeacting, dovetail keys for securing the anchor plate of the tank to the anchor plate of the underframe.
In the drawing forming a part of this I specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a tank car showing the tank. a
portion of the center sills and the anchoring means. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the anchor plate or member which is secured to the tank. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the anchor member or plate which is secured to the center sills. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, upon a larger scale. illustrating more particularly the details of the anchor means. Fig. 5 is a vertical. transverse, sectional view, taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a similar sectional view, taken on the line 6'-6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a view corresponding to Fig. 4 but illustrating another embodiment of the invention. And Fig. 8 is a transverse, vertical. sectional view. taken substantially on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
In said drawings, and referring to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, 10-40 denote channel-shaped center sills of a tank car undertrame, said sills being arranged in the usual manner. that is. with their flanges extended outwardly. The tank, which may be of any desired form. is designated generally by the reference A.
The means for anchoring the tank to the center sills of the underframe comprise, broadly, an anchor plate or member B secured to the tank, an anchor plate C secured to the center sills, and a pair of keys DD.
The tank anchor plate B is preferably in Specification of Letters Patent.

the form of a casting of general rectangular formation curved on its upper face, as indicated at 12, to fit the under side of the tank and having flanges 13 by which it is riveted thereto. The casting or plate B is provided with a central opening 14 to accommodate the discharge valve and other mechanism of the tank car and on its under face, said plate B is provided near its ends with a pair of undercut transversely extending grooves of dovetail formation 15 15. Also on its lower face and intermediate the dovetail grooves 15 and on opposite sides of the opening 14, said plate B is provided with a series of slots or recesses 16-16 extending transversely of the casting and open at their ends.
.The underframe anchor plate C is provided with a pair of depending flanges 17-17 which fit against the inner faces of the center sills 10 and are riveted thereto. On its upper face, the plate C is recessed along its outer edges at intervals. as indi cated at 18-18, so that said plate can be riveted to the top flanges of the center sills, as indicated by the rivets 19-19. Near its ends and adapted to aline with the undercut grooves 15 of the tank anchor plate B. the plate C is provided with corresponding undercut or dovetail shaped grooves '20--20. On its upper face and intermediate the grooves 2020, the plate C is provided with a plurality of upstanding transverse ribs or projections 2121 which are adapted to fit within the said recesses 16 in the plate 13. The plate C is also provided with a central opening 22 to correspond to said opening 14.
The tank A is applied to the under-frame by lowering the same with its anchor plate B on top of the anchor plate C and so that the ribs 21 fit within the corresponding recesses 16. This brings the dovetail slots or grooves 15 and 20 into alinement and the double dovetail keys DD are inserted transversely. Each set of grooves 15 and :20 and the keys D are preferably tapered lengthwise and also slightly in thickness and in actual practice, the lengthwise aper of the grooves and keys of one set is reversed with respect to the other set. The keys D are held against accidental displacement by any suitable means, such as cotters 23,
illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, is What is generally known as a one-point anchor, that is, the anchor is located at the center of the tank. In the construction illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the anchor is of the twopoint type. In this construction, two sets of anchor plates B and C are provided which are separated the desired distance and secured, respectively, to the tank and center sills. In this construction I provide a dowel pinarrangement, as indicated at 121 in Fig. 8,,but instead of extending the locking keys transversely of the car, the same are preferably extended lengthwise, as shown by the double dovetail keys D, most clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. In this construction, one key is inserted from each end.
With the anchoring means, above described, it is obvious that the tank can be quickly and rigidly attached to the underframe. The ribs and recesses 21 and 16 or dowel pin arrangement provides the necessary shearing area to prevent shifting'of the tank longitudinally or transversely relatively to the und'erframe. On acount of the use of double dovetail keys D and I), the two anchor plates are efiectively protected from vertical separation, and in addition, it will of course be understood that said keys provide shearing area against either longitudinal or transverse shifting, depending upon the location of said keys. Furthermore, the attachment of the anchor plate 0 to the center sills is such as to not only secure a strong union therebetween but also toefiectively brace the center sills and materially increase their resistance to shocks. By tapering the keys D and D and their corresponding slots, the parts will be pulled together very tightly and any looseness or play of the parts completely eliminated.
Although the preferred form of the invention has herein been shown and described, the same is merely illustrative and all changes and modifications are contemplated that come Within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
What is claimed is:
1. In a car having a tank and an underirame, means for detachably connecting the tank to the underframe including, an anchor plate secured to the tank, an anchor plate secured to the underframe, and a clove ea e /e tail shaped kc detachably connecting said plates.
2. In a car having atank and an underframe, means for detachably connecting the tank to the underframe including anchor plates secured to the tank and the underfraine respectively, said plates being provided with alined dovetail grooves, and a double dovetail key cooperating with said grooves for detachably uniting said plates.
3. In a car having a tank and an underframe, means for detachably connecting the tank to the underframe, including, anchor plates secured respectively to the tank and underfralne, said plates having coiiperating, transversely extending ribs and recesses on their adjacent faces to prevent relative longitudinal shifting of the tank and underframe, and detachable means for preventing vertical separation of the plates.
4. In a car having a tank and an undertrarne, means for detachably connecting the tank to the underfranic including, anchor plates secured respectively to the tank and underframe, said plates having cotiperating, transversely extending ribs and recesses on their adjacent faces to prevent relative longitudinal shifting of the tank and undertraine, and detachable means for preventing vertical separation of the plates, said means including a double dovetail key.
In a car having tank and an underfraine, means for detachably connecting the tank to the undert'rarne including, an anchor plate secured to the tank, an anchor plate secured to the underframe, and a dovetail shaped key detachably connecting said plates, said key being tapered in the direction of its length.
6. In tank car construction, the combination with center sills and a tank, or" anchor plates secured respectively to the tank and underframe, said anchor plates having alined, transversely extending dovetail slots, and a double dovetail keyinsertible within said slots for detachably uniting said anchor plates and to prevent vertical separa tion.
