DRAW-BAR GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,904, dated September 11, 1894. Application filed March 30,1894. Serial No. 505,713. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HEINRICH W. FREDRIOK JAEGER, of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Draw-Bar Guide, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to draw bars for railroad freight cars, and its object is to provide a new and improved draw bar guide, which is simple and durable in construction, readily applied on the draw timber, and adapted to be securely held in place thereon.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the guides; and Fig. at is a transverse section of the same on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The draw bar A, of any approved construction is arranged between the draw timbers B, B, and is provided with the spring 0, arranged between the followers D and D, extending transversely through the draw bar A into pockets or recesses E, formed in the faces of the draw bar guides F and'F, respectively, fitted onthe inner faces of the draw timbers B and B respectively. Each of the draw bar guides F and F has its body portion formed with a transversely-extending offset G, fitting into a corresponding recess cut in the inner face of the respective draw timber B or B, the said body portion being also formed at or near its middle with the vertically disposed rib G projecting from the offset G, and likewise fitted into a recess in the draw chamber.
The ends ofthe body of the draw bar guides F and F are formed with flanges G adapted to be bolted by the transverse bolts H, to the draw timbers B and B, the inner heads of the said transverse bolts being fitted into countersinks G arranged in the said flanges G Thus, the heads of the said bolts do not project beyond the inner faces of the draw bar guides, and thus form no obstruction whatever for thesides of the draw bar A. Each of the draw bar guides F and F is provided with a flange I extending transversely from the lower end to fit against the under side of the corresponding draw timber B or B, the said flange being fastened by vertically disposed bolts J to the respective draw timber B or B.
The draw bar shown in the drawings consists of a wooden core and two metal plates bolted to the top and bottom thereof respectively.
In the under side of the body of each draw bar guide is arranged a dovetail removable plate K fitting at its ends into corresponding dovetail grooves in the body G, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, the said plate K forming a removable bottom for the pocket E and the said plate is securely held in place by vertically-disposed bolts L held in the draw bar guides and shown in Fig. 1. It will be seen that a draw bar guide constructed in this manner can be readily and securely fastened in place on the draw bar timbers B and B, and the several bolts for fastening the draw bar guide in place are relieved of considerable strain by fitting the body portions of the draw bar guides into recesses in the inner faces of the draw bar timbers B and B. It will be seen further, that by removing the bolts L, the plates K can be withdrawn from the draw bar guides, so as to open the lower ends of the pockets E to permit of removing the followers D and D from the said pockets in case it is desirable to detach the draw bar forrepairs or other purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A draw bar guide formed on its inner-face with a recess for receiving the followers, and provided at its ends with flanges adapted to be bolted to the inner face of the draw bar timber, an offset extending outwardly from the guide between the said flanges, to engage a recess in the inner face of the draw bar timber, a rib projecting outwardly from the said offset toengage a further recess in the draw bar timber, and an essentially horizontal flange extending outwardly from the guide at the bottom thereof and beyond the outer face of the said rib, said flange being adapted to be bolted to the bottom surface of the draw bar timber, substantially as described.
