Description

H. c. WIBDEMANI. PAGKINGGASKET.
APPLICATION FILED DEO.18, 1905.
WITNESSES PATENTED SEPT. 4, 1906.
HENRY C. VVIEDEMAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PACKING-GASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed December 18, 1905. Serial No. 292.167.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HicNRY C. WIEDEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at De troit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Packing-Gaskets and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to packing-gaskets.
It has for its object an improved packing to be used to pack the joints of tanks, and especially those tanks made from large cylinders or prisms of metal with flanges turned thereon to abut against the packing interposed between such flange and a similar flange on an adjacent section of the tank.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section showing portions of two sections of a tank and the flange turned thereon, with the packing interposed between adjacent flanges. Fig. 2 is a perspective of a short piece of a gasket.
1 and Qindicateportions of the tank, and of these the portion 1 has a flange 3 and the portion 2 has a flange 4, both of which are turned at right angles to the body part of the respective portion or section of the tank. The packing-gasket 5 is of soft metal, having a web 6, which unites the broadened or thickened parts which constitute, respectively, the inner and outer faces of the gasket. The gasket has in cross-section the shape of an I-beam, with flanged portions 7 and 8, a uniting-web 6, and with grooves at each side of the web 6, between the flanges 7 and 8, and on each side of the web. In these grooves are laid fillets 9 and 10 of suitable packing material, which may be rubber or textile material or combined rubber and textile material, having a thickness suflicient to substantially fill the groove, but not suflicient to hold the flanges 3 and away from contact with the flanges 7 and 8 of the gasket. The fillets 9 and 10 and the web portions 6 of the gasket are provided with registering holes 12, throug1 which pass the bolts 14 that secure the sections of the tank together.
at I claim is- 1. In a packing-gasket, in combination with a soft-metal strip provided with holes for the engagement of bolts therethrough, and with flanges along each edge thereof, fillets lying against the web of said strip and filling the groove formed between the flanges, substantially as described.
2. In a packing-gasket, the combination of a soft-metal strip provided with flanges extending to' each side of a central web at each edge thereof, and fillets engaging against the web and filling the groove between the flanges at each side of said web, substantially as described.
3. In a packing-gasket, in combination with a pair of opposing flanged edges adapted to seat uniting bolt {members, a plurality of soft-metal members adapted to engage with their edges'between the engaging surfaces of said flanged edges, a soft-metal web spacing and uniting said soft-metal members, said web being of less thickness than the width of said soft-metal members and bein pierced for the engagement of bolts therethrough, fillets engaging between each face of said web and its opposing flanged edge, and bolts engaging through both of said flanged edges, said web, and said fillets, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY C. WIEDEMAN.
