RAZOR STROP.
Application med March 31, 19201. Semi No. 457,200.
To all 107mm 'it may conccrn v Be it known that I, VILLIAM VALLACE Gel-was, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Dighton, in the county of Bristol Vand State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Razer Strop; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others vskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and relatively efiicient razor strop' which is devoid of the Vobjections to which the ordinary leather strop is subject in that it presents a proper stropping and finishing surfacevinitially and without the preparation to which leather straps must be Vsubmitted before they can be used effectively and which is adapted to produce a keenerv and more satisfactory edge than can be produced upon a leather strop or than can be produced upon any strop of other material such as metal heretofore devis'ed or suggested, which is not subject to deterioration by moisture and which can be folded into compact form for storage and transportaj-` ti-on without detracting from the efiiciency thereof; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction of which a preferred embodimentis shown in the accompanying drawings, whercin:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a strop embodying the invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are sectional views of the extremities thereof to show the means for attaching thehanger and handle to permit of removal for rolling the strop vinto compact form for storage.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the blade or body portion of the strop. p
Figure 5 is a view of the strop folded for transportation. i
Figure 6 is'a sectional View of the folded device.
The strop consists of a fiat band of very fiexible, higly tempered sheet` steel, silver plated throughout and finely scored on one side to provide an edge preparing surface, the opposite side being smooth to form a finishing surface, the band being indicated at 10, the plating of silver or like relatively j Vantage of the use thereof is incident to the Vfact that such metal is of relatively soft has been found thatV Vsoft material being indicated in Figure 2 at I e 11 and the sooring being shown in the same or smooth quality and has an adhesive or i i frictional efiect upon the blade of the razor which is particularly advantageous in drawing the razor blade to a fine edge, but it` should be` understood that the coating or plaiting may be of other metals which as i compared with steel are relatively soft andy` have the same adhesive characteristics, among which may be mentioned copper, nickel and tin which in common with silver are not subject to corrosion and therefore are not affected by moisture to which a. strop in ordinary practice is constantly exposed.
An attaching plate 18, which is detachably secured to the strop by means of bolts and winged nuts 16, is connected to the hanger 14 by means of a swivel 15, the swivel permitting the stop to return readily so as' to give access with equal .facility to both sides or surface thereo'f. The hanger 14 is of hollow formation and open at one end. This end is closed by a plate 17 which has threaded engagement with the hanger and to which the swivel'l is removably connected by a boltla.` The other end of wall 17a of the hanger 14 is providedwith an opening 17h to permit the hanger to be engaged witha hook 17 secured to a wall or other support. An attaching plate 19 provides means for connecting the handle 13 to the strop. This plate is secured to the handle 13 by rivets 20 and it is deta-chably secured to the strop by bolts and wing nuts 21. The handle 13 is hollow and open at one end'to form a receptacle for the rolled strop blade, as shown in Figures' 5 andV 6 of the drawing. The hanger 14; is adapted to' receive the handle 13 carrying the rolled blade, the swivel 15 and the attaching plate 18, as shown in Figure 5 of the drawing, the end wall 17 forming a closure to retain the parts 13, 15 and 18 within the hanger.
The parts of the razor strop may be readily and quickly detached and placed within the hanger 14. The hangei' 14 containing` the othei` parts of the razor strop forms a small package which may be placed in a valise, suitcase V01' vtrunk for storage and ti'ansportation.
Having thus described the invention, What claim isz-M 1. A razo'i' strop having a fiexihle body of steel provided With a coating or plating of relatively soft metal.
2. A Iazor strop having' a body of flexible steel provided With a coating or plating of: silver. w
3. A razor strop having' a body of flexi'ble Steel provided with a coating or plating 'of WILLIAM W. GRAVES.
