UNITED STATES THOMAS E. ELLIS, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
SAW.
Application filed J anuary 16, 1922. Serial No. 529,612.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful I mprovements in Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to compound tools, and comprehends the association with a saw blade, of an adjustable tool and spirit levels, while the blade itself is designed to provide a square, the general construction being such to permit the tool to be very convenlently used for such purposes. I
Another important object of the invention resides in the construction of a saw blade to support the handle thereof for sliding movement toward or away from the saw, and also allow it to be arranged at an inclination thereto, the blade being further constructed to permit the rule and spirit levels to be conveniently associated with Or removed therefrom as the occasion requires.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and, arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein 2 Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the extended position of the rule;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a view showing the adjusted position of thehandle; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of the saw blade with the handle rule and levels removed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates a saw blade of well known construotion having a substantially straight edge 11, and formed at one end to provide an extension 12, the latter rising from the.
edge 11 and cooperating therewith to define a square. The rear end of the blade is cut away as at 13 to provide aspace for the tween parallel flanges 15. These flanges are handle 14-, the handle being positioned beslotted as at 16'to accommodate the element 17 which passes through the slot and engages the handle to hold it in a given position. The handle 14 by reason of this construction can be moved towardor away from' the blade, or arranged at an angle with relation thereto as clearly illustrated. The extension 12 above referred to is provided with substantially right-angularly disposed slots 18 and 19 respectively, and from the 1 elements 25 which also pass through the rule 26, the latter being suitably graduated as at 27 Nuts 28 are associated with said fastening elements'so that when they are tightened, the rule is held fixed relatively to the extension in its adjusted position. lllanifestly, I have devised a compound tool which can be conveniently handled and used in the several capacities enumerated, the tool in its entirety being very simple in construction, and cheap to manufacture.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I' desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. In combination, a blade, an extension projecting from one edge of the blade and having a slot extended partly across the blade, said extension together with the adjacent edge of the blade defining a square, a rule arranged at one side of the'blade and slidably mounted upon said extension, and fastening elements passed through the rule and said slot for holding the rule fixed relatively to thecxtension in any adjusted position.
2. In combination, a blade, a handle therefor, an extensionprojecting from one edge of the blade and cooperating therewith to define a square a rule slidably supported by said extension, means for holding said rule fixed relatively to the extension in an adjusted position, said extension having slots disposed substantially at a right angle, lugs pro- 1 o tension.
3. In combination, a blade having a cutaway portion at one end thereof, a handle arranged in said cut-away portion, spaced parallel flanges supporting said handle, said handle being associated with said flanges for sliding o tilting movement, an extension projecting from one edge of the blade and defining therewith a square, a rule slidably mounted on the extension, and means for holding said rule fixed relatively to the 2 extension in an adjusted position. v
In testimony whereof I-aflix my signature.
THOMAS E. ELLIS.
