rThis invention has relation ,to fastening elements and refers'more particularly to a fastener for securing the covers of fruit baskets inv position. j j ,Y j 7 c rlihe inventiony contemplates in addition to the usual bail and handle attaching means a simple, effective and inexpensive auxiliary means for fastening` the' coversof fruit baskets to the basket proper without injury to the contents, and atthe same time. to preclude any possibility 'of separationlof the same therefroinwhenintransit@ f As ,a yfurther object the invention aimsv to produce an auxiliary fastening element which maybe readily released tor permit of the removalfof the cover from the `basket when desired`withoutfinutilating either Vthe cover or the basket, ,c l

lhe invention furthermore contemplates a .fastening deviceof the character set forth which may be manuallyapplied without resorting to the use of hammers or other tools or implements which might tend'toinjure the contents'of the basket. l

c, "The fastening element which constitutes theinvention and `affords means for rigidly securing thecover in position on the basket consists of a strip ofinaterial l0 preferibl offcold rolled steel of approximately onetliirty-second of .an inch inthicliness and one-quarter of an `inch wide. To apply the 'fastening deidce.y after the basketfis lled, the covery is arranged thereover andthe lower extremity of the strip i() is inserted between y.it-lie vinner and outer hoopscause the lower extremity to project an ap preciable distancefbelow the lower edge of the basket iini. The bendable spnr 16 is a perspective view of` the fastener then bentoutwardly at substantially a right angle to the strip whereby'the same projects radially from' the basket. `The lower eX# posed extremity of the stripA projecting below lower edge of the outer hoop is then bent iipwardlyand inwardly over the outer periphery of the hoop D and the spur is i'orccd through the hoop and past the` edge oi the portion oit' the strip lying between the inner and outer hoops C and D, the terminalr from between the hoops C and l). lt will thus be seen that a simple, convenient and strong` fastener for retaining the top of a basket and the cover in rigid relation has been devised which may be easily and quickly opened orthe purpose ot display or inspection and tor replacing; without sacrinein@` the original security of the same.

l claim:

'L As a new article or manufacture, a cover fastening element for J'ruit `baskets consisting` of a strip or material, an angularly disposed head at its upper end and spaced parallel prongs depending 'ror said head., said strip having' a slit extending inwardly and downwardly from one oi 'the side edges of its lower end to provide a bendable spur for normally'occupying' the same plane as the strip.

Ais a newarticle olf manufacture, a fastening element or the character set `'i-'orth consistingl ot a strip of material having an singularly disposed head at one extremity, a pointed terminal bentin the same direction as the major portion ot the strip.v said head having` a slit extending angularly and inwardly from one edge. said slitted portion being bent in the same direction as the pointed terminal to provide an anchoring spur, and said strip having a slit extending inwardly from one of its side edges adjacent the opposite end thereof to provide a bendable spur.

3. A basket cover fastening element comprising a strip having an angularly disposed head at one extremity provided with anchoringspurs adapted to connect the head with the cover, the opposite extremity of saidstrip being insertable through the basket rim and bendable outwardly and upwardly over said rim, said extremity khaving a. slit extending inwardly trom one ot its side edgestoward said end to provide a bendable spur for anchoring` said extremity to the rim.

A basket cover fastening element comprisinga strip having an angularly dlsposed head at v one extremity provided with anchoring spurs adapted to connectthe head with thev cover, the opposite extremity ot said strip being insertable through the basket rim and bendable outwardlyvand upwardly over said rim, said. extremity having,` a slit extending inwardly from one of its side edges toward said end to provide a bendable spur for anchoring' said extremity to the rim, said spur normally.occupying the same plane as the extremity of the strip toy permit vot' the insertion of said extremity through the basket rim. l

The combination with a yfruit basket having lcircumerentially spaced slats and anpupper rim consisting` of inner and outer hoops between whichsaid slats are received and a raised cover including crossed slats and an annular dependingrim, of a fastening;l` element for securing the cover in position on the basket comprising astrip of material having;- its upper endbent inwardly at an angle to provide a head to overlie the upper portion olZ the cover, depending laterally spaced inner land intermediate spurs adapted Ato pass between the crossed slats, the former to lie' parallel with the inner pe'- riphery ot the rim and the latter to be an` chored within the same, the lower extremity of said strip v'being inserted through the space between the inner and outer hubs of the rim of the basket and between adjacent slats, said lower end havinga slit extending inwardly anddownwardly from one of the yside edgesto pro-vide a bendable spur normally oceupying the same plane as the strip.` said lower extremity oi the strip extending beyond the lower edge of theouter hoop and bendable outwardly and upwardly to overlie the same, said bendable spur being bent and inserted through and anchored in saidfhoops.
