CLOSURE FOB MILK-BOTTLES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed m 7, 1920. 'Serial No. 394,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIS MoAK, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Milk- Bottles and the like, of which the followlng is a specification.
The object-of" the invention is to' provide a bottle or jar closure of the type commonly used for sealing milk bottles and the like having attached thereto in improved manner extracting means for facilitating the removal of the closure from the bottle or jar in which it has been seated. The invention further aims to so construct and attach the extractor to the closure that it will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, render easy the removal of the closure from 30 the bottle and that it can be satisfactorily used in the cappingmachines commonly used to apply the closures to the bottles. 7
The invention consists in a closure comprising a thin disk of Wood pulp or other material and an extractor device which consists of a loop of wire, the closed portion acting as a handle and lying upon the upper surface of the disk, and preferably pointing to the center of the disk,"the limbs of the loop passing through the disk and extending at the bottom surface of the disk to its edge, which the ends of the limbs clasp, thus firmly fastening the extractor to the disk. The said ends of the limbs where they pass around the edge of the disk are embedded in the edge so that the latter remains practically unbroken and no opportunity is presented for leakage of the contents of the bottle.
40 An important feature of the invention is that by reason of the construction, as shown in the drawings, the closed handle portion does not lie over or near any portion of the fastening limbs located at the lower surface of the disk, so that the handle portion can be embedded in the upper surface of the disk to facilitate use of the closure in capping machines without affecting the holding ca%acity of the extractor.
y extending the Limbs of the extractor on the bottom of the closure and clenching the ends around the edge of the same, not only is a secure -method of attaching the extractor obtained, but commercial manu 55. facture of the closures at a low price and on Specification of Letters Patent.
'no danger of t e ends being unclenched.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
the large scale demanded by the trade is made practical.
Referring to' the drawings Figure 1 shows a top view of a closure embodying the invention. Fig. 2 shows a View of the under surface of the .said closure.
Fig. 3 shows a sectional view of the said closure.
Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the same. i
1 is agthin' disk of wood pulp, paper or other material, 2 is the extractor device made as a loop with'closed handle portion15, 3 and 3 being the limbs of the loop, they passing through the disk and extending parallel with and on the under surface of the same to the edge which their ends 4 and 4 clasp.
In practice, where closures are used in capping machines, it is necessary that an extractor device carried thereby shall not malimbs from the point of penetration to the edge of the disk and clenching their ends around the same, the strain in removing the closure from the bottle is'distributed over a relatively large portion'of the disk, and the strain bein upward, there is practically I While it is preferable that the closed handle portion 5 point to the center of the disk 1t is not necessary in all cases that it should do so. The loop can be made in any desired shape. I claim:
1. A bottle or jar closure comprising a thin disk'and an extractor device ofloop form having a closed handle portion lying uponvthe upper surface of the disk, with its limbs passing through the disk and extending at the under surface thereof to "the edge of the disk, and. with the ends of the limbs clasping the said edge. v
2. A bottle or jar closure comprising a 110 thin disk and an extractor device of loop handle portion lies upon the upper surface 10 form, Whose closed handle portion lies uponof the disk, with its fastening portion passthe upper surface of the disk and its limbs ing through the same and extending upon pass through the n'iaterial of the same, said the under surface thereof to the edge of the 5 limbs extending to the edge of the disk at disk and clasping the said edge.
the under surface thereof, and clasping the In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa- 15 edge of the disk. ture.
3. A bottle or jar closure comprising a thin disk and an extractor device Whose "HARRIS MOAK.
