Description
COMPANY, F NEW Y'Oin.,
T NATNAL BlSCUT N. Y., A CORPSJATGN @F NEWT JERSEY.
CARTON.
Application led November 28, 1919. Serial No. 341,071.
To @ZZ l0/tom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Hor Tennant-zon, a citizen of the United States, residing at liiontclair, in the county ot Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain neu.7
and useful linprovei'nents in Cartons, ,oit which the following` isa specification.
My invent-ion relates to cartons or containers which are intended particularly for food products, such as crackers. biscuits, etc. The object of my invention is to provide a ormof'construction wliicli may be used for carrying the goods :troni the manie facturer to the dealer 'and for the display of the Lgoods at the dealers place of business, the article being eiieective for the purpose but of a cheap construction, so that the same may be thrown away when emptied. lt is a. usual practice at present io'r boxes or cartons oi'f an enduring character to be us d in forwarding the `goods from 'the inanuiivtui-er to the dealer with the requirementthat the empty bones be returned to the manufacturer which is sometimes considered an objectionable feature.
ln the manufacture of my in'nkiroved carton. accordingly, the endeavor has been to simplify the construction, elii'ninate was-te, and to employ inexpensive materials. l accomplisli this by the utilization of strips of cardboard. or the like arranged 'to torni the six sides oi the carton, the top or cover section and baclr of the carton being integral., or at least formed ot material o't the same width, the top and back being joined by a suitable hinge construction, which may be formed simply by creasing the material at the joint it the top and back are integral. The top thus 'formed rests on the upper ede'es oi' the front and sides. and id,
c. liave any ccordinigly, the backV and toV ed Ltr-oro a" strip oi. material ofi the same widtb without the irecessity of cutting army of the same to provide the side tlanpcs oi the cover. The front and side iiauges or downwardly extending edge portions, which are necessary to malte the carton tight when closed, are provided in my construction by the addition ot a strip or strips of thin metal or similar stift material which are secured to the upper surface of the cover adjacent its side and front edges,
and are bent downwardly to form the desired downwardly extendi-ng` edge portions. This reinforcing means also stitlens the construction to a considerable degree, so that tbe carton may be torined of comparatively thin and flexible material, and yet be adapted to carry a comparatively heavy load. l
rln order that my invention may be more clearly understood, attention. is hereby directed to tbe accomps-.nying` drawings torinin'g part oi this application and illustrating one embodiment ci? invention. in. the drawings, F l represents a view partly in. Mliront elevation and partly in. section of a carton einbodyinp,l my inif'entiongfig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. l; rFig. It is a top pla. view, certain part-slicing shown broken aw"- and one part being shown in horizont ection; liiq'fd; an eillai d tional detail ti on line $41, ot
3; l 5 and 6 are f L.n views ofthe two strips troni which the carton may be- :l Fig, 7 is a lan 'elevation of ounted in posi ion, prior to ifolde into the forni of a carton.
e to the drawings, my improved carton is preferably formed, oit apair or strips oip4 cardboard or the like material. Of th ,se the strip l, shown in 5, is adapted to form the iront. bottom, back and top portions of tb. c rton. rlbeeeportions. may be formed respectively by the portions f2, 5?, 4L and 5 ot" the strip, the strip beingl adapted to be bent on the lines shown in dash at G and 6. rThe sides of the box are adapted to be formed bythe portions 7 and 8 of the strip shown in F 6. which strip has a central portifm which adapted to cross and fo rined be secu to the. bottoni portion .d of strip 1. ln .torn ne the bei'. tbe short VIrip may an d secured ferial Such vided with a Short extension ll which ls o consruclon` dcsclhod, hut is as broad adapted 'to ho bont dovwL "L y'o oll :L o lnlioa'od by the accompanylng` claims. front flange which will en ond in lon; of f. hat l Claim isz-fthc liront socton Q oii ho cnron when the ln 1 canton, thc conlhndion'oi' memcovol.' if; closed.
