Description

LMUBI B. M. SPENCER.

SEWING KIT. HLED SEPLZB. 92

M. SPENCEE, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
BESSIE SEFIING KET.
i' 'o (LZZ ii /2 0722 it may come mi Be it known that l, Bnssin M. SPENCER, a citizen oi? the United States and a resident off New York, in the county and State of New Yor-le have invented new and usetul lmprovement in a Sewing Kit, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sewing kits or cases in which a pair of scissors, e thimble, needle and cotton, pins and the like may be kept.
lt is the particular object ot' my invention to provide a sewiug kit which Wlll be distinctive, attractive and which furthermore will be compact.
n accomplishing the distinctiveness and attractiveness of my improved sewing kit I form the case or kit so as to resemble a hat of the sombrero type. :in addition to this the box or eontainer in which the kit is contained is made to resemble a ladies? traveling hat box. The compactness of the case is accomplished by providing several leaves or pads between the top and bottom of the hat which are adapted to receive a supply of pins and needles and thread.
The details of my invention will be made more apparent in the accompanying specifications and drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the sewing case complete, with the cover of the box removed,
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the hatshaped kit,
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the kit shown in l ig. 2 in open position, and,
Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the kit.
In the drawings and particularly in Fig. 1 the numeral 10 represents a box or container made preferably of paste-board and covered with black glazed paper to simulate patent leather. A lid 11 is provided for covering the open end of the box. In order that the box may more nearly resemble a ladies traveling hat bom straps 12 and 13 are secured to the box and lid rcspectively while the exterior ot the box is decorated with pastersand names.
The case or kit proper is as has been hereinbefore mentioned, made to resemble a hat of the sombrero type. The kit comprises a body formed of top and bottom portions 14 and 15 respectively, in the form of sheets of flexible material such as crocheted 'fabric or the like. The top portion 14 is tormed with an enlargement or bag 16 for the reception of a thimble 17, thus forming the part which resembles the crown of a hat. A strap 18 is secured to the bottom portion 15 by sewing the strap thereto at its ends. intermediate its length the strap 18 is provided with a snap fastener 19 by which a pair of scissors 20 may be held in place.
Intermediate the top and bottom portions 14 and. 15 are a. plurality of pads or sheets 21, to which are secured accessories such as needles and thread 22 and pins 23 of various types. The top and bottom portions 14 and 15 and the sheets 20 are all united at one edge thereof by sewing as indicated at 24 in Fig. 4. Diametrically opposite the stitching 24 there is provided a snap fastener 25 which unites the upper and lower portions 14 and 15 of the kit, thereby hiding from View the thmble 17 and the sheets 21 containing the needles and thread and pins.
The top and bottom portions of the kit are preferably crocheted, while the 'sheets 21 may be of cloth such as flannel or the like. Arranged around the top side of the portion 14-of the kit I preferably provide decorations 26 for the purpose of resembling the trimmings of the hat. These trimmings may be in the nature of a wreath of flowers and of such colors as to harmonize with the color scheme of the hat.
By giving due attention to the decorative features and the color scheme employed the kit when complete may be made to be highly attractive and to resemble a. miniature hat.
Obviously by increasing the number of sheets 21 the Capacity of the kit may be likewise increased. Obvious other modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
Having thus described my invention, what li claim is:
1. A sewing kit resembling a hat comprising a. body formed of two sheets of fiexible material, means for supporting a thimble in one of said sheets thereby simulating the crown of the hat, means for supporting a pair of scissors on the other sheet, needle and pin carrying leaves interposed between said sheets, means for holding said sheets t0 I gether.
2. In a sewng case a kit resemblng a hat, said kt comprsng two` sheets of flexble materal formng the top and bottom of the hat, the top sheet havmg an enlargement for supportng a thmble to resemble the CI'OWIl of' a hat, means for securng a pau" of sessors to said bottom sheet, a. pluralty of leaves dsposed between said top and bottom sheets :for carrying needes, pns and' the like, means for` securng said sheets and leaves together` permanently at one side thereof, and a snap fastener for` detachably seeurng sei& sheets together at the opposte edge thereo. 15
