JEWELRY CASE.
j Application led ApriI 11, 1921. Serial No. 460,260.
T o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BUCHSBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois` have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Jewelry Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming'a party of this specification.
This invention relates to jewelry cases and more particularly to a case that is used for carrying rings and similar pieces of jewelry.
It is a purpose of the present invention to provide a jewelry case of ieXible material that has a body portion provided with a plurality of flaps that are adapted to be folded into overlapping relation to provide a closed case or receptacle, and to provide certain of said flaps with securing means for holding said case or receptacle in closed position.
It is 'a further purpose of the invention to provide a jewelry case of the above mentioned character that is neat in appearance, that is compact and which can be readily and easily carried in the pocket.
It is still a further purpose of the invention'to provide a jewelry case of the above mentioned,character with a lining of plush or similar textile material and to provide a substantially rigid backing for said lining,
said backing being preferably provided with a hole or recess, so that the article of jewelry to be placed in the case may seat itself in the depression inl the lining formed therein due to this recess.
It is a further purpose of the invention to provide suitable means for holding the articlc of jewelry in position in said case. This means may take the form of a holding band or may be formed of the lining material, stiifened in an)v suitable manner and shaped iu the form of an envelope or pocket to receive a part of the article of jewelry, such as a ring that is to be placed in said case with a portion of said ring or other article of jewelry projecting beyond said pocket, so as to display the set or other ornamentation carried by the same.
l* is a further purpose of the invention when the last mentioned holding means is used to hinge said holding means to said case, and to provide resilient means permitting said holding pocket to be pressed downwardly into engagement with the lining and causing said pocket and the article carried rthereby to spring upwardly into an angu.
lar lposition when said case is opened to display the article of jewelry to advantage.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings showing certain forms that, my invention may take, pro-- ceeds. However, l desire to have it distinctly understood that l do not intend to limitsmyself to the exact details shown and described, but that l intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall within the scope of the claims.
ln the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a. plan view of my improved jewelry case in unfolded position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof in folded position;
Fig. 3 is a section thereof taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing a ring in place in the case;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a. modified form;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is ay fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the modified form of case.
Referring in detail to the drawings the improved jewelry case comprises a body portion 10 of flexible material having flaps 11, 12, 13 and 14 extending outwardly therefrom in opposite pairs 11-12 and 13-14. The flaps 11 and 12 are preferably provided with cooperating fastening devices, such as the snap fastener comprising the socket member 15 and the member 16 having a boss 17 adapted to enter the socket in the member 15 for securing the flaps in folded position, as shown in Fig. 3. The flaps 13 and 14 are adapted to be folded toward each other as shown in Fig. 3 andlv the flaps 11` and 12 are adapted to be folded toward each other, as shown in Fig. 2, said flaps 11 and 12 overlapping the flaps 13 and 14C so that when the members 11 and 12 are fastened together the entire device will be in the folded position sho-wn in Figs. 2 and 3.
Mounted on the body portion 10 and secured thereto by means of suitable adhesive material is the stiffening member 18 which is provided with an opening 19 and over which is secured a lining or covering of '55 tions of the material being secured together f tion and the stiifening member 18 of the jewelery case. The member 18 is preferably made of carboard and is provided with any desired shape of opening 19, the opening 19 being substantially oval as shown in Fig. 1, when the case is made for carrying a ring, such as that shown at 22 in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that by providing the opening 19 a recess is formed on the inner surface of the case within which the piece of jewelry, such as the ring 22, is adapted to seat. In order to hold the ring 22 in proper position within the case and relative to the `recess formed due to the opening 19 being provided in the member 18, a flexible holding member 23 is provided, the same being preferably a band of ribbon or similar fabric material which is secured at its ends between the body portion and the stiflening member 18, it being of course understood that the member 23 can be secured in any desired manner. The stil'ening member 18, the body portion 10, the lining 20 and the band 23 are preferably secured together by means of any desired adhesive.
In Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive is shown a slightly modiied form of jewelry casecomprising the body portion 10', the flaps 11', 12', 13 and 14 bearing the same relation to the body portion 10 and to each other as the corresponding flaps bear in Fig. 1 and be.- ing provided with fastening devices 15 and 16 which secure the parts together in folded position in a manner similar to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The body portion 10 is provided with a stiiening member 18 having an opening 19 therein similar to the opening 19 of the member 18 and providing a recess for the same purpose, and in a similarmanner as that of the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3inclusive. A' lining 20 is also provided that is similar to the lining 20 and is secured at 21 in a manner similar to the way in which the lining 20 is secured. In this form, however,a different means is provided for securing the ring 22 in position in the case. A piece of fabric material, preferably similar to the fabric lining 20, is formed in a tubular shape forming a Hattened tubular member 24, the free end porin any desired manner, such as by sewing. The tubular member 24 provides a pocket 25 within which the ring 22 is adapted to rest as shown in Fig. 5. The edge portion of the tubular member 24 is preferably turned inwardly as shown at 26 in Fig. 5, and a layer of stiffening material, .such as cardboard 27 is secured between the overturned edge 26 and the body portion 24 of the tubular member for the purpose of holding the tubular member in proper sha e and giving the proper amount of stiffness t ereto. Extending beneath the stiifening member 18 is the strip of iexible material 28, the same being secured between the member 18 and the member 10 by means of any suitable adhesive, preferably being secured to the member 10 throughout the engaging faces of said ` members 10 and 28. The member 28 extends upwardly through the tubular member 24 and around the outer surface thereof, as at 29, and has the opposite end portion 30 thereof extending beneath the member 18 and secured tothe opposite end of the member 28, thus securely holding the tubular member 24 in position and binding theparts securely together.
Secured between the member 18 and the body portion 10 is a spring member having the straight portion 31 extending inwardly toward the center of the body portion of the case, having the intermediate portion 32 extending at right angles thereto and parallel to one of the side edges of the body portion and having the leg 33 extending in a plane at right angles to the plane of the members 31 and 32, the leg 33 of the spring extending between the inner and outerlayers of the tubular member and between the outer portion 29 of the member 28 and.
the inner portion thereof, whereby said spring is. securely held in place.
It will be seen that the spring will tend to hold the tubular member 24 in an angular position relative to the base 10 when the case is open as shown in Fig. 4. The spring, however, permits the tubular member 24 with the ring 22 in place therein, to be folded downwardly into engagement with Y the lining 20 and to remain in such position while the iaps 11' and 12 are fastened t0- gether by means of the fastening devices lreferred to above. When the fastening devices are released and the case is unfolded the ring holding member in this form will spring upwardly, thus clearly and advantageously displaying the -ring, as will be evident from Fig. 5.
From the above it will be seen that a very compact and simple device is provided for carrying jewelry, such as rings, which can be readilyy and cheaply made and which is neat in appearance. The body portion and the fiaps are preferably made of leather or imitation leather or similar material. It is, of course, to be understood that any other member can be carried inthe case providing the recess is shaped properly to receive such member and a ring 1s merely shown forf illustrative purposes.
