CHARLES F. TOLLES, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FETTERS FOR CWS TAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,943, dated October 21, 1873; application led July 23, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GHAELEs F. ToLLEs, of Nashua, of the county of Hillsborough, of the State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improved Cow-Tail Holder or Milkers Protector; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying draw ings, of Which- Figure l is a top View, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of it, such figures representing one of the clamps as closed and theother as open. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one of the said clamps.
The cow-tail ,holder consists of two jawed clamps, A B, a connecting-chain, 0, and a spring and a mechanism applied to each clamp to latch or lock its jaws open, and4 to operate to unlock them and cause them to be closed. Each of the said clamps consists of two jaws, a, a, formed and hinged together, as shown,
the heads x a' of the jaws being chambered and a helical spring, D, for forcing the jaws together, being arranged in the chamber and around the pivot E, by which the jaw-heads are connected. The spring at the opposite ends is insertedin slots b b made in the hinge parts or heads of the jaws. One of the jaws of each clamp has an arm, c, extending from it, and provided with an eye, d, to couple the arm with the connecting-chain. Furthermore, there is a small bolt, d', arranged within the arm, such bolt provided with a spring, e, to force it upward.
When the clamp-jaws are drawn apart, or, in other words, the clamp is open, the bolt takes into a notch, f, made in the head of the other jaw, as shown in Fig. 4. By pressing down the knob g of the bolt so as to force the bolt out of the notch, the jaws will at once be closed together by the spring.
In using the cow-tail holder, as described, one of the clamps is to be applied and clamped to the tail of the cow, and the other to one ot' The apparatus, substantially as described,
consisting of the two-jawed clamps A B, their connecting-chain G, actuating-springs D D, and bolting mechanism, all arranged and combined substantially in manner and to operate as specitied.
CHARLES F. TOLLES.
