Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
EDWARD W. KELLEY, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR TRIMMING HORSESHOE-NAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,523, dated December 8, 1874 application filed March 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WATSON KELLEY, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse- Nail-Machines, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to improvements in guides for the purpose of conducting horseshoe-nails to a revolving clipping-wheel; and consists in the employmentof an arched forked guide, provided with suitable springs, between which the male dies pass during their revolution, for the purpose of holding each nail in its proper position between the male dies till they they are locked together. I
On the drawing, Figure 1 represents a ground plan of my invention, and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same as applied to my revolving clipping-wheel.
a represents the clipping-wheel, and I) b the male dies, between which the nail c is held. The nail-guide consists of two curved bars, 01 d, as shown, attached to the tunnel e, or otherwise, as may be practical. Two side springs, ff, are attached to the inside of the curved guides d d, as shown, whereby the nail is kept centrally with the male dies 1) b as they pass between the said springs f f. In the upper part of the curved guides 01 d is hinged a movable arm, h, the extreme end of which is pressed downward by means of a spring, g, or its equivalent, as shown.
The object of the arm h and spring 9 is to keep the head of the nail in contact with the clipping-wheel during the time when the nail enters the male dies 1) b, and till they are locked together; and as this can only be ac complished by pressure on the upper end of the nail, it will be seen that the lever h and spring 9 accomplish the object automatically in a very simple and easy manner.
Havingthus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim In combination with the clipping-wheel a and'its male dies 1) b, the arched guides d d, with their side springs ff, lever h, and spring 9, or their equivalents, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
EDWARD WATSON KELLEY.
