Be it lmown that T, Ronnnr S. BLAIR, va cwitizen of the United States, and residing at pouth Orange, in the county of Essex and `citate of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Holding Device for Doors and the like, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
This invention relates to holding devices. @ne of the objects thereof is to provide a simple and practica-l device for holding a door or the like securely in position. Another object is .to provide a device of the above nature which shall be automatic and reliable in its action. Another object is to provide a device of the above nature in which the various parts are durable and act efficiently without injury to themselves or coacting parts. Other objects are to provide a device of theabove nature which shall be inexpensive and readily manipulated.

This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations :if parts, and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof; all as more coinpletely outlined herein.

Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawing, there is shown a door 1 to which is secured a fitting 2, as by means of the countersunk screws 3. This fitting comprises arecess eprovided at its lower end with a shoulder and preferably with a pair of guiding ribs 6 which may be cast integral therewith. The lower end of the fitting is formed into a. recess 7 for the purpose hereinafter described.
Mounted within .fitting 2 is a slidable rod or spindle 8 provided at its upper end with a button 9 and having its lower end riveted to a cupeshaped member 10, shown more clearly in 3. The rod 8 has extending therethrough a pin 11 one end of which pren fitting as at 141- and tilted upwardly by ther spring 15. vThis latch, in which the rod 8 has a loose fitting, is tilted or clamped by the spring 15 to bind on the rod and resist movement in an upward direction. A downward movement, however, as by pressure on the button 9, is unopposed .as this action tends to swing the latch into a hori- Zontal position. rThe rod 8 thus moves downwardly without twisting` due to the position of the pin 11 between the guide ribs 6, and when it has been depressed to the desir d point it is automatically held in such position until the latch 18 is depressed permitti-ngrod 8 with its associated parts to rise until the cup-shaped member 10 comes into contactwiththe curved walls of the recess 7.
Within the cup 10 is secured in any dcsiredmanner a plug25 ofrubber,or preferably of a firmer composition such as celluloid. This device being mounted to swing in the directions indicated by the double arrow 26 is formed to provide a recess 27 extending entirely through its lower port-ion. Also, as by the incisions 28, there are cut loose flaps 25 at each side and thus provided inclii'ied abutments 80, the lower ends of which act a door-engaging member. When it is desired to hold a member, as the door 1, against movement. pressure is applied upon button- 9, as by the foot, and rod 8 is thus tnrust downwardly. This action, which is unimpeded by the latch 18 as above pointed out, carries b v means of the cup-shaped member 10 the floor-engaging device 25 into engagement with the floor. With the device thus thrown against the fioor, if there bc :i tendency to movement in either direction in dicated by arrow 26, then one of the abut-- ments 30 has a corresponding tendency' to swing about lits connection wit-h .the upper end of the plug 25 and wedge itself more firmly into engagement with the floor. The parts may be so proportioned that this automatic increase in pressure attains a high value, and even if the abutment 30 swing over into the space indicated by the recess 27 it will be supported and heid against .further movement in such direction by the opposite abutment 30 and Hap le. this manner the door .is locked against appreciable movement in either direction. A slight pressure upon latch 13 compressing spring' l5 will release the spindle 8 and allow the spring` 1Q to draw the` device up from the floor-engaging position.

Having thus revealed this invention, l
claim as new and desire to secure the following combinations of elements, or equivalents thereof, by Letters Patent ot the United vStates:-
l. ln a holding device for doors and the like, a member secured to the door, a floorengaging device, means onsaid member like, a member secured to the door, a floorengaging device, means on said member adapted to force said device downwardly into engagement with the oor and automatically :retain it in such position, and
means adapted to release said device and permit it to move upwardly, said device comprising a unitary member of yielding material having1 a substantially V-shaped recess parallel with the door and its portions on opposite sides ot' said recess being shaped to swing into amming position.
3. ln a. holding device for doors and the like, a member secured to the door, a floorengaging device, means on said member adapted to torce said device downwardly into engagement with the floor and automatically retain it in such position, and means adapted to release said device and permit it to move upwardly, said device comprising a resilient member provided with a V-shaped recess substantially parallel to the door and having incisions spaced from and substantially parallel to the walls' of said recess.
