Description
Dec. 19, 1922. E. H. TAYLOR.
CAN TONGS.
FILED AUG. 1-8. 1921.
ATTORNEYS WITNESSES I I Patented l9, I922.
hi hi i 'f E EDWIN HOLLY TAYLOR, OF ST. EDWARD, NEBRASKA.
CAN TONGS.
Application filed August 18, 1921. Serial No. 493,317.
To all u; 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN I-IoLLY TAY- LOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Edward, in the county of Boone and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tongs, and the purpose of my invention is the provision of a pair of tongs particularly designed, although not necessarily, for the lifting of cans from ice-cream freezers. My invention is simple and inexpensive and so constructed as to readily penetrate the ice surrounding the can to effectively grip the can so as to permit the ready removal thereof.
I will describe one form of tongs embodying my invention and will then point out the novel features thereof in claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view showing in perspective one form of tongs embodying my invention in applied position with respect to an icecream can.
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the can and tongs shown in Figure 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, in which similar reference. characters refer to similar parts, my invention in its present embodiment comprises a pair of arms A and A crossed and pivoted at the points indicated at P and having their free ends formed with semi-circular jaws J and J, respectively.
a single flat strip of suitable metal. bent at a point intermediate its ends in the form of an arc to provide'the semi-circular jaw J or J. At the ends of the jaw, the strip is bent at right angles to provide the parallel portions 15 or 15" of the arm A or A which lie in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the aw. At. a point remote from their ends the arms 15 or 15 are bent inwardly at right angles so as to provide handle portions 16 or 16 which are disposed. in super-imposed relation and preferably secured by welding or other suitable means so as to provide reinforced handles.
The portions 15 and 15 are pivotally connected by suitable fastening means such Each arm A or A and its correspondlng aw J or J 1s formedfrom as rivets, screws or the like so as to allow of the swinging movement of one arm with respect to the other in moving the jaws J and J to gripping or nongripping positions.
In the use of the tongs, the jaws J and J are moved to non-gripping position by spreading the handle portions'16 and 16 whereupon they may be applied to a can in the manner shown in Figure 1. By forcing the handle portions together, the j aws are moved to embracing position with respect to the can so that by gripping the tongsat the handle portions the can may be readily lifted.
In practice, the aws J and J are forced downwardly into the ice surrounding the ice-cream can until they are below the usual beading adjacent the top of the can as shown in Figure 2 whereby upon. pulling the tongs upwardly the jaws will not only embrace the can but engage the beading so that the can'can be readily withdrawn from the freezer. It is to be particularly noted that the plane of the strips constituting the jaws is vertical so that the lower edges provide efficient means for readily penetrating the ice surounding the can thus facilitating the application of the tongs.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of can tongs embody ing my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications maybe made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention. or the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A pair of can tongs, each of said tongs including a single strip of metal bent intermediate its ends to provide an arcuately curved jaw and at right angles to the ends of the jaw to provide parallel portions dis posed in the plane at right angles to the plane of the jaw, handle portions formed by bending the terminal. portions of the pnral lel portions at right angles, the parallel portions of one tong being disposed in cross relation to the parallel portions of the other tong, and fasteners for pivotally connecting the parallel portions of one tong with respect to those of the other tong.
EDWIN HOLLY TAYLOR.
