In order to augment the eiliciency of the engagement, the toe portions terminate in sharp edges, as best shown in Figure 4c, which are slightly curved so as to intimately embrace the eX- terior of the container and to effectively grip beneath the flange.
The lever, 11, is provided with an extending operating handle, 19, which in service position is disposed above the lever, 12, as shown in Figure 1. This handle is preferably curved, as shown, to enable it to be grasped in the hand and to readily adapt itself to the same.
While the device may be made of any desirable rigid material, ll prefer to make it of metal of strip form which may be bent into the desired shape to provide the claw portions, 15, and the handle, 19. The material, steel, is found to possess particular utility in this connection, for with this material the toe portions, 16, may be tempered to give them great strength and durability and to enable them to successfully perform the task for which they are designed.
In operation, the claws, 15, are separated by the pivotal movement of the lovers, 11 and 12, to an extent sufficient to insure the passage of the toe portions over the flange of the container. The handle, 19, is then gripped by the user, whereupon any force applied to extract the container will force the claws so that the toe portions are urged into firm engagement with the container and beneath the flange thereof and any increase in the extracting force will result in a. like render ble 0f withstanding increase'in the gripping action of the claws. hus, the container maybe readily elevated by applying a lifting force to the handle, 19, and it may be carried about and transported by means of the device described with considerable ease andfacility.

What I claim is:
Lifting tongs for ice cream cans, comprisingtwo levers made of substantially fiat and relatively wide strip material, an intermediate portion of one of the levers having its wide, flat side extending in a substantially vertical plane, the major upper portion of the other lever having its Wide, fiat side extending in a substantially vertical plane and being pivoted at its upper end to said vertically disposed intermediate portion of the first lever, the upper portion of the first lever being extended to form a lifting handle, the lower, gripping ends of both levers being turned substantially ninety degrees and having their extreme ends formed into curved'terminal toes for engaging under an abutment on the can to be lifted.
