LAVERN BORDWELL,
. BnA rEa' To all whom it may concern: 7
Be: it known that I, VLAVERN" BoRDWnLL, a citizen of the United States residin at New York city, in the 'countyof Newfork and State of New York, have invented :cer-tain new and useful Improvements in Beaters,
the frame; the" handle may' be'j differently bent or shapedto suit ,the particular requirements of they-user and applied' to the frame of which the following-is aspeci'fication, reference being had therein to'the accom panyingdrawing- Y This inventionrrelates to improvements in heaters, and is particularly adapted 'for culinary use, and pertains to that types-of heaters shown in Patent No, 892,856, July 7th, 1908', grantedto E; W. Ladd.
My present invention relates to an improvement in the handle of the beater, and the objects of the improvement are to make the frame more rigid; to provide the greatest strength therefor where it is required; to enable the handle to be shaped to meet individual needs without impairing the strength; capable of being shaped to suit the natural grasp of the user; ease and reduction of cost in manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper end of the beater mechanism, showing my improvement applied thereto with the handle shaped to suit certain requirements of the user.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of Fig. 1, shown partly in section.
Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the improved handle shaped to suit other requirements of the user.
This invention relates to a beater having a frame 1 to which is journaled an operating wheel 2, and the heaters 9, the operating wheel adapted to rotate these heaters in a manner well understood by those skilled in the art.
The usual form of the frame 1, in this type of heaters, is to have the handle integral therewith, as shown in the said Ladd patent. In my present improvement I make the handle 3 of a piece of flat material, or fiat-steel wire, which is not integral with the frame 1.
In carrying out my present constructlon, the upper end of the frame 1, 1s prov1ded with a loop 4, extending laterally in respect to the frame 1, and preferably to the opposite side of the frame from the operating wheel 2. The handle 3 passes through this loop 4, and is shaped to fit snugly against the upper end of the frame 1, and has its lower end riveted to the frame 1, as shown at 5.
on NEW YO K, n. Y.
The upper extremity of; theh'andleB- is formed into 7 a'hand-hold loop 6,- by means of which the'beater is supported in'its proper,
position to operate upon; the material that is being beat. I 7
By making thehandleipart' separate from :1. That is to say,- the stem'portion of the handlev maybe twisted, as at 7', to cause the hand-hold 6 to=stand in andirectionl-parallel with the plane of the operating-iwheel 2 ,.as'"
shown in Figsii-ll and 12, 61 the "stem fof the handle 3 may be left untwisted, as shown in v Fig. 3, whereby the hand-hold 6 is in a direction at right angles to the plane of the v operating wheel 2. One ofthese positions suits the requirements of some operators, whereas the other position suits the requirements of other operators.
- Furthermore, by reason of this construchandle which is very rigid and strong and produces a handle that is readily and cheaply manufactured with the, advantages herein recited.
As hereshown, the edges of the frame 1 are provided with longitudinally struck outward beads 8, betweenwhich. the upper portion of the stem of the handle snugly fits and which further serves to hold the handle rigid with the frame against relative lateral movement. y
This construction prevents lateral vibration of the frame of the beater, and, therefore, enables the beater to be held steady and to give a firm strong feeling in the hand of the operator, and also prevents a tendency to a wedging of the turning mechanism by reason of any twisting or vibrating of the frame in operation.
Having thus described my invention,,what Iclaim and desire 'tos'ecure by Letters Patent is I 1. A beater of the type described, (5.0mprising a frame carrying a beatermechanism, the frame having an elongated upwardly projecting portion, a handle separate from and extending longitudinally. of the upwardly extending portion, the handle engaging the upper end of theupwardly extending portion and being attached to the lower end thereof to provide a rigid connection between the parts, the handle extending beyond the upwardly extending portion and carrying a hand-hold.
2. A beater of the type described, comprising a frame carrying an operating mechanism, the frame having an upwardly extending arm, of a separate handle extend ing longitudinally ofthe frame, the handle attached to the frame at its inner end, and interlocked intermediate its ends to the upper end of the said longitudinally extending frame arm, the upper endof the handle carrying a hand-hold.
8. A beater of the type described, comprising a frame carrying an operating mechanism, the frame having an upwardly extending arm provided with a loop, a handle extending through the loop and having its lower end attached to the frame, the handle having the handheld at its upper end, for the purpose described.
4. A beater of the type described, com,-
prising a frame carrying an operating mechanism, the frame having an upwardly extending arm with an integral laterally extending loop, of a handle extending through the loop and having its lower end attached to the frame, the upper end of the handle provided with a hand-hold, for the purpose described.
5. A beater of the type described, comprislng a frame carrying an operating mec ianlsm, the frame having an upwardly extending arm provided at its upper end with an outwardly extending loop, a handle ex- LAVERN. BORDWELL.
