PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed January 5, 1926. Serial No.34t9377.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, ALBER J. hinrnes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a new and use ful Pipe lVrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and more particularly to wrenches adapted for use in connection with pipes, or other cylindrical objects.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a pivoted jaw section, the pivoted jaw section having connection with the handle of the wrench in such a way as to permit of un limited adjustment of one jaw with relation to the other, so that the device may be adapted for use in connection with objects of various sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character including a detachable jaw, together with means for locking the jaw in its various positions of adjustment.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 illustrates a fragmental elevational view of a modified form of the wrench.
Figure 4: illustrates an end elevational view of the movable jaw as disclosed by Figure 3 of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the handle of the wrench which tapers towards the free end thereof, the opposite end thereof having an enlargement 6 formed integral therewith, and extending at an angle with relation to the sides of the handle 5, the extreme edge of the jaw 6 being serrated as at 7 to provide biting teeth to embed themselves in the article being operated on, to the end that movement of the jaw with relation to the object under operation, is absolutely pre vented.
On the opposite side of the handle 5, at point adjacent the enlargement 6, are the curved shoulders 8 and 9, the shoulder 8 being a greater distance from the opposite side of the handle than the shoulder 9, for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.
The shoulders 8 and 9 form a part of the lugs 10 and 11, respectively, the outer surfaces of which are curved as at 12, the inner surfaces thereof being curved as at 13 to present hook members, which hook members contact with the removable jaw 1d, forming a part of the invention.
A. securing bar 15, has one of its ends pivotally connected to the lug 10 by means of the screw 16, the opposite end of said securing bar 15 extending to a point beyond the lug 11, the extreme end of said bar being upturned as at 17 to be engaged by the locking link 18, which has its ends extending into the handle 41 so that the same may pivot with relation to the handle to accomplish the locking result.
The removable jaw 14, which cooperates with the stationary jaw forming a part of the enlargement 6, includes a relatively long curved arm 19, the outer end thereof being provided with the teeth 20 to permit the jaw to bite into the article under operation to eliminate the possibility of the same moving, while in operation.
A relatively long opening 21 is formed within the opposite end of the removable jaw 14, the opening being of a length greater than the width of the handle 5, to permit the jaw to move freely with relation to the handle, in order that the adjustment of the jaw 14: may be readily and easily accomplished. A rounded bar 22, forms one of the end walls of the opening 21, and contacts with the curved surfaces 13, of the lugs, to insure the movable jaw 14 being supported on the handle 5.
In the modification as illustrated by Figures 3 and a of the drawing, l have showna jaw particularly adapted for operating on pipes wherein a bolt may be secured to the flange thereof, which bolt provides a means for enabling the jaw 14', as illustrated in the modification, to be applied to the article under operation.
curved section the extreme outer end theroit being rooted as at 16 to provide parallel hooks which hooks 1'? are provided with rved surfaces 38 to permit the some to readily engage around the bolts, 20 but which may be positioned in the bolt openof :1 flange of pipe.
he i 14 also includes at An opening 19 is also formed in the jaw which openin accommodates the handle of the wrench. It is course to be undertc-od. that various types of jaws may be proided in connection with the handle, the jaws ever should be provided with openings Ilfilt the ne to more freely over the ite the assembling; of the articular character Off Work accomplished. Having thus described the invention, What is cl .imed i':
A Wrench comprising a handle portion, a
jaw formed at one end of the iandle portion, reerimrdly extending; curved lugs termed on one side of the handle portion, a. pivoted jaw having a loop portion to be fitted over the handle portion and adopted to be positioned between lugs, a flexible securing bar having one end thereof secured to one of the lugs and having a hook member formed at its opposite end, a link member carried by the handle and adapted to engage the hook portion to hold the securing bar against movement, and said securing bar adapted to engage the outer ends of the lugs to lock the pivoted jaw against displacement.
In testimony the; I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence 05 two Witnesses.
