T0 c zZZ whom it may concern: I I
Be it known thatl, dnonen lil.
a citizen of the United vcent 0t Racine, in the county oi. a State of vv isconsin, have invented new and lilseiul Improvements in Trunk Locks, of which the .ilollowing is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvemcntsin trunk locks.
Trunks are oftinies sent by express to their desti11ation,'and in shippingit is desirable to seal the lock to prevent s rreptitious opening of the same. This has been found very difiicult due to the shape of the ordinary trunk lock which does not permit securing a sealing wire thereto.
It is one or" the objects of the present invention to overcome the before-mentioned objectionable features and provide a trunk lock having means whereby the loch: may be easily wired and sealed in a very simple manner.
A. further object of the in ntion is to provide a trunk lock having" a; portions which may be easily wired and sealed in a simple manner and with a minimum amount of material.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved trunk lock and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a portion or"- a trunk provided with the improved lock and showing a seal connected thereto;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a sectional detail view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. is a sectional detail of the loclr hinge.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 5 indicates the body of a trunk of type, 6 the top cover and Y theimproved loclo Said lock comprises a plate 8 adapted to be secured to the trunk cover and which is provided with the hinged lock member 9. The lock portion 9 of the lock projects out wal'dly and is provided with transverse loch:- ing bolts 10 which look against the edge l. of the opening of the escutcheon plate 1 isconsrn.
vases Jtened to the body portion of he plate 8 is also provided with dwhich enter tongue rethe escutcheon plate 12. ztically swing the locl Zing member o open position coiled springs lo encircle the e pin 16 of the lock memher and the opposite ends of the springs bear against the plate 8 and the lock member 9 respectively.
"Ilhe loch member 9 between the lock portion '9 and the hinge pin 16 is provided with a vertically extending slot 1'? through which extends a post 18 having an eye 19 in its outer end. The inner end of the post in order to is rigidly riveted to the escutcheon plate 12 above the lock opening and projects through the loclr member slot a sullicient distance to position the eye of the post in front of the lock member. A wire or staple 20 is ex tended through the eye and a seal member 21 of any construction desired is non-remov ably secured to the end portions of the wire or staple as shown in Fig. 1 and as the seal is larger than the slot the lock cannot be opened with, breaking the seal. As thus constructed and sealed it will be impossible to surreptitiously open the trunk without the knowledge of the owner or shipper. As the part added to the lock is very small it is hardly noticeable and does not in any manner interfere with the ordinary use of the trunk.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the trunk lock is of very simple construction and is well adapted for the purpose described.
l r hat I claim my invention is:
it trunk loclc comprising a plate member having a keyed lock member hinged thereto and provided with an opening, an
escntcheon plate engaged by the lock memher and having a projecting post which or:-
hrough the lock member opening and I provided with an eye in its outer end poi and a sealing means extending through a; trunk lock, comprising a plate memher having a he ed lock member hin ed r! t D thereto and provided with a projecting lock and an opening between the lock and the hinge connection, an escntoheon plate engaged by the projecting lock and having an outwardly projecting post which e2;- tends through the lock member opening and is provided with an eye in its outer end portion, and a sealing wire extending through the eye and having aseai attached to its opposite ends.
et. The combination with a trunk having a lock formed with a hinged a nd keyed locking member and an escutcheon plate, of a sealing means therefor comprising an eyed post projecting through an opening formed in the hinged locking member, and a sealing member extending through the eye of the'eyed post.
5. [he combination with a trunk having a lock formed with a hinged and keyed looking member and an esoutcheon plate member engaged thereby, one of said members having an opening and the other member having an eyed post which extends through the 0pening, and sealing means extending through the eye of the eyed post.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa ture.
' GEORGE HENRY VHEARY.
