WIND OV] SCREEN.
Application inea my 1e,
To @ZZ w wm t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY FlNoriH, a citizen ofthe United States, and residing at Flatbush, Brooklyn, in ythe county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Screens, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the artto whichit appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to what are known as window screens, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class, the construction and arrangementfofwhich is such that one side portionof the frame is adjustable laterally and may be locked in its outermost position so as ,to securely lock and hold thefscreen or screen `frame in the window, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed. c j,
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated `by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Q Fig. l is a side view of my improved window screen;
Fig. 2 a central vertical section of one side portion thereof;
y Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 of Fig'; and
Fig. i a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing forming part of this specication, I have shown at a an ordinary window screen comprising top and bottom frame members a2 and a3 and side `frame members fr* and a5.
The top and bottom frame members and the side member ai* are or may be constructed in the usual or any desired manner, and secured therein is a wire mesh body 7J which may also be formed and secured in positionl in any desired manner, and this wire mesh body Z9 is secured in the frame adjacent to the'back partthereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The side frame member a5 of the frame is composed of two separate parts, said frame member being divided vertically, the outer part a6 thereof being movable toward and from the inner part, and said outer part a is provided in the inner face thereof with a deep vertical groove a7, which is rectangu- 1921. serial no. temeva. i
lar in cross section and within whichv the outer portion of the parte? fits as clearly shown at as, and with this construction the part as, is movable inwardly and outwardly on the part a5. y
The stationary part of the frame is provided centrally thereof with a central vertical slot as, and in the top portion of which is pivoted as shown at c a crank lever d having a tkshaped or ilshaped portion Z2 which operates in said slot and which is adapted to bear on the outer' wall oftheslot a7 in the movable parteG of the frame and secured to said wall, in the construction shown, is a metal plate e onwhich the part Z2 of the crank lever is adapted to bear, and the lower member of the V-shaped or Ushaped portion d2 of the crank lever isV provided with an arm'ol3 by whichV said crank leveris manipulated, and which is adapted to engagea hook or retaining device f secured to or in the part 'a5 of the screenframe.
The movable `part as of the screen frame is providedwith pins g which are movable into andy out of sockets g2 formed inthe parta5 of the screen frame, and `which serve as Iguides and retainers for said part a? inv its inward and outward movement, and the part a5 of the screen frame is also provided with horizontal slots 7a., and passed therethrough and through. the side walls 71,2 of the slot a? in the part a6 of the screen frame are bolts i, which are freely movable in the slots 7L and permit of the inward and outward move ment of the part as, while at the same time locking it to the part a5.
lit will be understood that the window frame in connection with which my improved screen is employed, but which is not shown, is provided in the sides and the bottom thereof with grooves in which the screen frame fits when in use, and with my improvement, when the parte6 of the screen frame is in its innermost position, in which the crank lever d assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the screen frame may be easily inserted into the de sired position in the window frame, after which the crank lever d is swung into the position. shown in Fig. 2 and locked therein, and in this operation the part a6 of the screen frame is forced `outwardly by said crank lever into firm Contact with the adjacent side of the window frame, and this locks the screen frame in said window frame, and when it is desired to remove the screen :frame from the window frame, all that is necessary 1s to unlock the cranlr lever d and swing it into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, after which the main part of the screen frame may be moved to the left or in the direction ot' the part (1,6 thereof, and this operation will shorten the screen frame so that it may be removed from the window `trame as will be readily understood.
My invention is not limited to any specilic form or-construction of the main trame, all that is necessary being to provide the part a5 thereof with the movable part a and other details ot construction which will render the device operative, as herein shown and described, and changes in and modilioations or the details of construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope ot the appended claims.I without departing' from the spirit of my invention or sacriiicing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and `desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A window screen one side portion of which is provided with a vertical slot, a movable art mounted on said side portion and movale outwardly and inwardly thereon, a crank lever pivoted to said side portion within said slot and adapted to frictionally engage with said movable part to hold it in an extendedkv position, and said lever being provided with integral means which extends inwardly of said side portion and by means of which said lever is operated.
Q A window screen one side portion of w ch is provided with a vertical slot, a movable part mounted on said side portion and movable outwardly and inwardly thereon, a cranlr lever pivoted to said side portion within said slot and adapted to operate in connection with said. movable part to hold it in an extended position, said lever being provided with an arm which extends inwardly of said side portion and by means of which said lever is operate-d, and'means cooperating with said arm for holding the same in a predetermined position.
3. A window screen one side portion of which is provided with a vertical slot, a movable part mounted on saidside portion and movable outwardly and inwardlythereon, a crank lever comprising ya V-shaped head portion, an arm portion extending inwardly of said side portion of the screen, the head portion oit said lever beingpivoted to said side portion of the screen with-v in said slot and the V-shaped portion thereof being adapted to operate in connection with said movable part, means cooperating with the arm portion of said lever for holding the same in a predetermined position,r and means for limiting the movement of said movable part. i p
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention l have signedvmy name in presence oit the subscribing witness this 18th day of July 1921.
