FILING DEVICE.
Application filedMay 5, 1921. Serial No. 466,965.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE S.'BUCHAN'AN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Filing Device of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to filing devices and more particularly to a device for filing cards or inserts in such a manner that the filing thereof shall be visible and that the cards shall be easily re-arranged or reclassified.
It is a purpose of my invention to provide a filing device which shall be of very few parts and of exceedingly simple construction, all of the parts thereof being readily stamped and shaped out of sheet material.
It is the further purpose of my device to provide for the insertion or rearrangement of said cards or inserts with a minimum arrangement of the remaining cards or inserts. A complete description of my invention will be found in the accompanying drawings and specification, in which 2- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device with portions broken away;
Figure 2 is an enlarged rear elevation of the same with portions broken away;
Figure 3 is a section on the line wm of Fi ure 2;
igure 4: is a detail section of the lower end of the back plate on the line Y--Y of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a detail showing the upper end of the side plates to provide for a sliding arrangement on the back plate.
Figure 6 is a front elevation of my device assembled for use.
Referring to the details in the figures, 1 is the back plate made preferably of sheet metal. At the outer lateral portions of this sheet metal plate equally spaced slots 2 are cut extending substantially one-third of the distance from the outer edge of said plate to the center thereof. These slots, then, provide a series of serrations 3, 3% all serrations are then crimped in the shape shown at 3 in Fig. 3 to provide a guideway between these portions 3 and the uncrimped portions 3. This guideway is adapted for the reception of side plates 4. The side plates extend the length of the back plate and are crimped over at their outer edge so that a cross section as shown in Figure 3 has substantially the shape of an unequally armed U. The crimped portlon 1 is adapted to extend inwardly far enough to hold the filing cards in position while the length of the arm 4 is substantially that of the slots 2. The arm 1- as stated, bears on and slides between the serrations 3 and 3 The width of the U or that 1s, the distance between the portions 1 and 1 is equal to the thickness of the plate 1, plus'that of a member 6, the purpose of wh ch will be hereinafter described.
Mounted along the central line of the plate 1 1s a second front plate 5 separated from the back plate by a spacer 6. As noted in the figures, front plate 5 is of a greater width than the spacer G and extends beyond the same to provide a space 7 for the reception of the under edge of the filing cards or inserts.
As shown in Figure 4c the lower edge of the back plate is crimped as shown at 8 to provide a shoulder 9 on which the lowest card may rest.
At 10, Figure 5, is shown the detail of the upper end of the side plates 1 with a portion 11 crimped over to provide a shoulder 12 which acts as a slide bearing for the side plates 4 at the upper edge of the back plate 1.
Cards or inserts 13 are shown in position. The front plate may have its face provided with numerals to indicate the relative position of the cards.
From the foregoing my device will be seen to operate as follows:
The cards or inserts are maintained as shown in the relative positions on the back plate 1, resting on the upturned edge 9 of the back plate 1 and prevented from lateral. movement and held from forward movement by the front plate 5 and the inwardly extending flange 4 of the side plate 4. When it is desired to change the relative position of any of the cards or inserts the same may be moved vertically to create any vacant spaces, or, by moving the side plates laterally until the edge of the insert is clear of the inwardly extending flange 4 of the side plate 4 the insert may be removed. This insert may then be placed at any other relative poling system by inserting at the which can be cheaply and easily manufac tured and operated, and which will provide lad for the insertion of a card or insert at any given position Without the removal of and with the minimum of disarrangement of any of the remaining inserts.
I claim:
1. A filing device comprising in combination, a back plate of sheet material proyided with portions at its lateral edges adapted to form a longitudinal guideway, side plates adapted to fit Within said guideway on said back plate, and a front plate mounted on said back plate and longitudinally and centrally thereof so as to form central guideways.
2. A filing device comprising in combination, a back plate of sheet material provided with portions at its lateral edges adapted to form a longitudinal guid'eway, side plates adapted to fit within said guideway, and a front plate mounted on said back plate and longitudinally and centrally thereof, and means spacingsaid front plate from said back plate, said spacing means being of less width than said front plate.
A filing device comprising in combination, a back plate of sheet material provided with portions at its lateral edges adapted to form a longitudinal guideway, substantially U-shaped side plates of substantially unequally armed U-shaped cross section adapted to fit within said guideway on said back plate, and a front plate mounted in spaced relation to said back plate and mounted centrally and longitudinally in such a manner as to provide longitudinal central guideways.
4. A filing device comprising in combination a back plate of sheet material provided with portions at its lateral edges adapted to form a longitudinal guideway, said back plate being provided with a crimped portion at its lower extremity for the purpose described, side plates adapted to fit within the lateral guideway of said back plate, and a front plate mounted in spaced relationto said back plate, and mounted centrally and longitudinally of said back plate in such amanner as to provide longitudinal central guideways.
A filing device comprising incombination a back plate of sheet material provided with portions at its lateral edges adapted to form a longitudinal guideway, said back plate being provided with a crimped por tion at its lower extremity for the purpose described, side plates adapted to fit within the lateral guideway of said back plate, said side plates being provided with a crimped portion at their upper extremity for the purpose described, and a front plate mounted in spaced relation to said back plate and mounted centrally and longitudinally of said plate in such a manner as to provide longitudinal central guideways.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
