WRENCH.
Application filed. January 10, 1922. Serial No. 528,296.

Be it known that I, THOMAS BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lonoke, in the county of Lonoke and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a quick acting wrench.
1.0 My object is to produce a wrench in which a jaw having a shank is pivotally connected to the handle of the wrench, a second jaw has its shank provided with a carriage which is arranged for slidable movement on the first mentioned jaw, while links pivotally connect the second mentioned jaw to the handle whereby the swinging off the handle on the pivot that connects the same to the shank of the first mentioned jaw will cause the second. mentioned jaw to be moved toward or away from the first mentioned jaw to clamp or release an article from between the jaws.
A further object is to produce a wrench of this character wherein the jaws may be locked when adjusted with. respect to each other, the locking means being arranged. conveniently with respect to the handle. of the device, whereby the same may be con- ?0 veniently manipulated by the user of the wrench.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form partol? this specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1..
Figure 8 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4: oi- Figure Figure 5 is an edge view.
Figure 6 is a side elevation oi? one of the jaws to illustrate more clearly the toothed head formed on the shank.
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line 'T7 of Figure 1.
The handle of my improved wrench is indicated by the numeral 1. This handle has one end rounded, as at 2 and is provided with a slot or opening at the edge of the said rounded portion. The slot or opening provides a pocket 3 for the rounded head portion 4 on one end of a shank 5. The 0 outer end of the shank carries a jaw 6. The numeral 7 designates a pivot which passes through the rounded portion of the handle 1 and through the head at of the shank 5. The outer edge of the head 4 is toothed, as at 8. From the pocket, the handle has a grooved extension in which there is pivotech as at 9 a dog 10. The dog is influenced by a spring 11 whereby to bring its toothed or active end in engagement between the teeth 8 on 7 the head 4t. ot' the shank 7, and thus hold the jaw 6 at an angle with respect to the handle.
The handle 1, at the end thereof to which the head is pivoted, and opposite the pocket in which the dog is received, has an out- 7 wardly projecting lug 12. To this lug there are pivoted, as at 13, links 14.. The links straddle the inner end of a shank 15 that carries at its opposite end a aw 16 and the said links are pivoted. as at 17 to the said shank. The shank 17 has ren'iovably secured thereon acarriage 18 which is substantially U-shaped in cross section and which receives thercthrough the shank 1 of the jaw 6.
The jaws 6 and 1'7 have their inner or active faces toothed or serrated. and it will be apparent that when the handle 1 is brought to one position to arrange the shank 5 and the jaws 6 carried thereby at an angle with respect to the said handle. a turningot the handle on the pivot 9, after the dog 10 has been brought out of engagement with the toothed surface 8 of the head 4 in one direction, a push will be exerted on the 5 links 14., causing the said links to move the shank 15 to brin the jaw 1.? carried thereby toward the jaw G to firmly clamp an article between the jaws. lVhen so engaged. pressure on the dog 10 is released. and the jaws are thus locked in such position. A pressure on the tail portion of the dog 10 will, of course bring the said dog out 01? engagement with the toothed surface 8 of the head 4:, and a movement of the handle in an opposite direction will cause the jaw 7 to he moved away from the jaw (i.
Having described the invention, I claim A wrench including a handle, a shank having, a rounded toothed head which is pivotally connected to the handle, and said shank carrying a jaw, a spring influenced 1.0
dog on the handle engaging the toothed head of the shank, a second shank also carrying a jaw, a carriage on the second shank surrounding the first mentioned shank, and
links pivotally connected to the handle and 15 to the second mentioned shank.
In testlmony whereof I affix my signature.
THOMAS BLAIR.
