Be it known that I, WAL'rHnR HIBY, a-subject of the German Republic, residing at lNoordwijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, have in- 5 vented certain new and useful Improvements in Subheated Coke Ovens with Vertical Heating Flues (for which I have applied `tor a patent in Germany January 3, 1916 of which the following is a specification.

The draught in the fines and chambers is reversed from time to time and the working'is carried on. in the following manner: ln one case the heating gases pass through tuyere or burner passage c and the air for combustion through the openings It, the sole-fines e, the checker-work-chambers cl to the heating-fines b; in these heating-fines the combustion takes place in a vertical direction. The waste-gases travel downwards through heating-fines b1, checker-Workchambers d1, sole-fines el, pipe connections il and pass the opened Hap-valves .761 to the chimney flue Z and to the chimney; the Hap-valves h1 and le are closed.
About every half hour7 the draught-di.- rection is reversed and now the heatinggases enter enterthrough tuyere or burner passage c1, the air through opening la, sole fines el, checker-work-chambers all, to the heating-fines 61;. the waste-gases travel downwards through lues chambers (l, sole-dues e, pipe connections i, pass the opened Hap-valves k' and go through the chimney-flue Z to the chimney,'while theiiapvalves h and if, are closed.
The importance of the invention consists lchiefly inthe arrangement that for each individual heating-flue gas and air can be regulated in 'a remarkable Asimple manner from the substructure underneath the oven andthat consequently a uniform heating of the whole length or' the oven wall is ensured with absolute certainty. Both gas and air Iare regulated in a practically cold state, so that all the regulatii'ig arrangements may be easily handled and kept in goed order. Having now `described my invention, what l claim as new is: l

In a horizontal coke oven 'with vertical heating iiues, said oven being raised and provided with subways underneath the oven to permit access to and operation of the regulating devices, the combinationwith said vertical lues of a row of tuyeres for supp'. ying the gas arranged beneath the heating ilue's, a row of parated, cheekerwork regenerators for preheating the air7 one `regenerator by the side of each tuyere and means for separately regulating the'amount oi' air passing through each regenerator, said air regulating means being regulatable and accessible from the subways and said tuyeres and said checkerwork regenerators being situated in the space between the floors l of 'the oven chambers and the ceilings of the subways.
