Be it known that I, HENRY SYKEs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have iny vented a new and useful Improvement in Awnings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a front view of this invention. Fig. 2 is avertical central section of the same.

This invention consists in an awning which is contained on a spring or other roller situated on the exterior and top of a window, and which is combined with the blinds of said window in such a manner that the arming can be adjusted in any plane on the inner sides of said blinds when the same are held at right blinds or shutters B B, that are on the outside Y of the house, and are connected to said window-frame by means of hin ge-j oints in the usual manner. C is a flexible shade or awning, which, when not in use, is wound on a roller, D, preferably made self-acting, that is mounted in suitable journals above the blinds B on the exterior of the window, being protected by the cornice E of said window, which cornice is made with an overlapping edge to cover said roller. The awning C is provided with adjust ing-hooks a a, which are formed on the opposite ends of the stiffening-slat F, and said hooks are made to t in staples b, secured on the inner sides or surfaces ofthe two opposite blinds B, so that when said blinds are held perpendicular or at right angles to the window the hooks a a of the awning can be adjusted in said staples b, and by these means said awning is held in an inclined plane or position in front of the window. By providing a series of staples I am enabled to adjust the awning in any desired plane. The blinds B B are retained in a right-angled position by means of braces c c, which are affixed on the sill of the window-frame A, and are provided with hooked ends that catch in staples at or near the bottom of the blinds.
If desired, the cornice of the window can be made so as to entirely conceal the roller of the awning and its paraphernalia from View; and, when drawn out and secured, my awning forms an ei'ectual shade and protector for the window; and, furthermore, when rolled up,
the same does not interrupt the operation of the blinds or shutters.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the awning C with the blinds or shutters B B of a window, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the adjusting-hooks a a, staples b b, and braces c c with the awning C and blinds B B, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
This specification signed by me this 8th day of September, 1873.
HENRY SYKES. Witnesses GHAs. WAHLERs, E. F. KAsTENH-UEER.
