ANDREW G. BRANDT, O1 SCRANTOII, PENNfsYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA RUNNER.
AppIication filed March 9, 1921. Serial No. 451,069.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW G. BRANDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Runners; and I do hereby declare the following to be .a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to runners for umbrellas and more particularly to a self looking runner.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character indicated of very simple and economical construction which will be positive and automatic in action and without springs.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter more particularly (lescribed and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which iike reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
Figure 1 is an elevation view of a fragment of an umbrella structure showing the improved runner;
Fig. 2 shows a vertical medial section of the improved runner in its upper locked position, and
Fig. 3 shows the improved runner in vertical section in its lower locked position.
Referring to the drawings applicants improved device comprises a runner 1 adapted to slide upon umbrella rod 12- having a lower terminal ridge 6 and adapted to have stretchers :22 secured to its head 13 as at 3. Longitudinal slots 5-5 are cut in runner 1 which slots determine a strip i which, intermediate its ends, is pressed outwardly from the body of the runner, the ends of the strip constituting risers between which and the rod a wedging member is adapted to be inserted. A member 7 is slidably mounted upon runner 1, said slide member 7 being provided with a longitudinally ct:- tending slot 8 adapted to overlie strip t of the runner. A wedging member 11, preferably a roller, is mounted on slide member 7 as at 101O so as to extend transversely across slot 8 and under strip 4:.
In operation the slide memebr 7 is grasped and the runner moved upon rod 12. So long as the runner encounters no tension roller 11 will roll freely upon rod 12 situated about mid-way of strip 1. As the run ner approaches the top of rod 12 and the umbrella arrives at its extended position tension. is encountered which causes slide member 7 to rise upon runner fl, forcing roller 11 upwardly under strip eluntil suiticient frictional tension is created between the strip 4: and rod 12 to securely lock the runner in position. To lower the umbrella, the slide member is again grasped and drawn downwardly whereupon, roller 11 is drawn to its position mid-way of strip and the runner slides freely upon rod 12. As the runner again approaches the handle end of the umbrella rod 1L, tension is again encountered and slide member 7 :torces roller 11 toward the lower end of strip a and again in locking position between said strip and rod 12.
Modifications in the precise form and structure of the present device and within the scope of the present invention will readily suggest themselves in the minds of those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of a rod, a runner slidable on the rod, a slide on the runner, said runner intermediate its ends having a pair of oppositely disposed risers, each of which makes an acute angle with the rod, and a wedging member carried by said slide adapted to be forced into one or the other oi? said angles whereby to interlock the runner and rod.
2. The combination of a rod, a runner slidable on said rod and having two longitudinally extending slots defining an intermediate strip, a slide member on said runner having a longitudinally extending slot adapted to overlie the strip of said runner and a roller movable with the slide and ex tending transversely of the slot and under said strip.
3. The combination of a rod, a runner on said rod and a slide member slidable on said runner, said slide member carrying means adapted to be forced between the runner and the rod to interlocl: said runner and rod.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
ANDREW G. BRANDT.
