Be it known that I. lVALn'nMAn lions, a citizen of the United States. residing in the borough of i lanhattan. city, county, and State of New York. have invented an Improvement in Brassieres. of which the following is a specification.

lleretofore. so far as I am aware. bust supporters have been made in various nranners. but in all instances the lower front portion of the supporter has been so associated with the means for connecting the parts of the garment together and securing the same on the body as to fit closely to the body and oftentimes to bind the same. In these garments also the upper portions of the supporter, as commonly constructed, have been relatively loose so as to permit of conforming to the busts of the wearer and to permit of a sag creating the appearance of a depression between the busts of the wearer. These garments furthermore have been constructed of one or more pieces of material so shaped as to conform generally to the busts of the wearer when adjusted to position on the body. The object of my present invention is the provision of a bust supporter so constructed. that it may be adjusted to position and the parts thereof made to extend across the body at their upper edges so as to prevent a depression between the busts and to produce a relatively flat surface extending between the busts and also to provide the parts of the garment with relatively loose lower edges so that the same may not only conform to but, [it beneath the busts of the wearer without having any binding effect. As preferably constructed the garment consists of overlying front members extending between the axillary lines of the body. with each me1nber substantially straight along its upper edge and curved or tapered at its lower edge whereby one end of each of the front mem hers is relatively long and the other end relatively short and the tension or pull is effected in a diagonal direction by each of the front members to produce the desired results.

The bust supporter made in accordance with my present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. in which,

Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the garment in a flat position.

Referring to the drawing. it will. be seen that my improved bust supporter preferably comprises front overlapping members indi cated at 10 and 11. These, as will be understood, may be made of any suitable material and are substantially of the same outline or configurationbut placed in reversed positions. The opposite ends of these front members are of different lengths and the long end 12 of the front member 10 as illustrated is secured to a tape or binding 13 at the left side of the garment, while the oppsite or short end of the front member as indicated at 14 is connected to a similar tape or binding 15 at the right side of the garment. Similarly the long end 16 of the frontmember 11 is connected to the tape 15 and the short end 17 of the front member 11 is connected to the tape 13, these connections being made by suitable lines of sewing or stitching or otherwise. The upper edges 18 of the front members 10 and 11 are substantially straight and are preferably secured to one another, while the lower edges 19 and 20 of the front members 10 and 11 respectively are preferably made to taper or to be curved from the long to the short end of each of these overlying and overlapping front members.

' The garment also includes back members indicated'at 21 and $22. the back member 21. being secured to the tape 13 and the back member 22 to the tape 15. It will furthermore be understood, however. that instead of employing the tapes 13 and 15 or similar binding members. the long edge 12 of the front member 10 and the short end 17 of the front member 11 may be connected together and to the back member 21 by a suitable line or lines of stitching, or otherwise, and similarly the long end 16 of the front member 11 and the short end .14: of the front member may be connected together and to the back member 22 by suitable lines of stitching or otherwise.

The garment may be secured in position on the wearer passing around the body by means of a tape 23 secured to the extremity of the back member 22 and provided with a,.

series of eyelets or holes 24: to be engaged by a hook 25 adjustably or otherwise connected to a tape 26 secured to the end of the back member 2].

Also as illustrated the garment may include suitable shoulder straps 27 and 28. The shoulder strap 27 at one end is preferably connected between the upper edges of the front members and at the opposite end to the back member 22, and the shoulder strap 28 at one end is secured in place between the upper edges of the front members and at the opposite end to the upper edge of the back member 21.

In the use. of this garment when adjusted to place, as will now be apparent, there will be a tension or pull exerted by each of the front members in a diagonal direction crossing substantially at the center or front central portion of the garment, and furthermore that this tension will cause the upper portion of the garment to extend directly across the busts of the wearer to produce a flat line or front efiect, whereas the lower edges of the overlying front members. are so constructed as to obviate the tension ordinarily produced at the lower edge of the bust supporter, and these parts are so, constructed furthermore as to fit beneath the busts of the wearer to assist in supporting the same. As illustrated the overlying front members of the garment preferably extend between the axillary lines of the body of the wearer and the garment is completed by the back members extending from the axillary lines to the center of the back, although the invention is not limited to constructing the garment so that the parts thereof are thus limited.

I claim as my invention:

1. A brassiere comprising body members having overlapping bust supporter portions, each having an oppositely tapered lower edge, with the end of each body member connected to the other body member at sub stantially the axillary line thereof, and means for adjustably connecting the free ends of the body members the back of the wearer.

2. A brassiere comprising body members having overlapping front portions acting as bust supporters, with the upper edges of the said overlapping portions being substantially straight and connected to one another, while the lower edges of the said overlapping portions are tapered and disconnected from one another, the end of each overlapping portion being connected to the other body member at substantially the axillary line thereof, and means for adjustably connecting the free ends of the body members at the back of the wearer.

3. i lbrassiere comprising overlying front members each having a long end at one axillary line of the garment and a short end at the other axillary line of the garment, the upper edges of the said overlying front members being substantially straight and connected to one another, while the lower edges of the said front members are tapered and disconnected, a back member connected to the long end of one front member and the short end of the other front member, a second back member connected to the opposite ends of the said front members, and means for connecting the back members together to secure the garment in position on the body of the wearer.
