UNETZEB STATES WILLIAM dorms, or snnrnirin, MISSOURI.
CLOTHING GUARD FOR FASTENIN'GS.
Application filed April 10, 1922. Serial No. 551,377.
To aJZ whom it may 0012 061% Be it known that I, VTILLIAM G. CLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gallatin, in the county of Daviess and State of lllissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Clothing Guard for Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a guard or shield for association with the head of a set screw or other fastening to overcome the danger of the fastening engaging and tearing clothing of an adjacent person which may accidentally contact therewith.
The invention aims to provide a simple, inexpensive and eiiicient construction for the purpose stated adapted to be anchored on the set screw as by means of a constricted end portion, one adapted to extend outwardly beyond the head, one which is resilient to permit application of a wrench or other tool to the fastening, and one which may be made of: a single strand of flexible wire.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating one practical embodiment.
In said drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved guard in place on a set screw used to secure a drive wheel to a power shaft;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through a guard, set screw and adjacent parts on the line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the guard alone.
Lil-re reference characters designate like or similar parts in the different views.
Referring specifically to the drawing. a set screw is shown at 10 having the usual head, in this instance square as at 11, and a screw threaded shank 12 which passes through a collar 13 on a sprocket wheel 14 in driving relation with a chain 15, in order to engage a. driving shaft 16 for said sprocket wheel. This showing is to be taken as conventional and that of the set screw 10 as conventional of a fastening generally.
in actual practice where a fastening head such as 11 projects in the relation shown in the drawing, it frequently catches into the clothing of the operator or hy-stander or other adjacent person, and injuring the same during operation of the wheel 14.
The present invention has been devised wlth a view to overcoming the objection mentioned. In carrying out the invention, it is preferably made from a single strand of resilient wire, having its edges rounded or smoothed and which is twisted into coils at 17 and at 18. It will be seen that the coils 17 are of greater diameter than the coils l8 and that the latter are substantially in contact with each other. The outer terminal of the strand is fastened to the adjacent coil in any suitable manner as by clinching as at 19 and appropriate smoothing of the joint thereby made.
In use, the shank of the set screw 12 is passed through the coils 18 and after the set screw is fastened, such coils 18 are disposed intermediate the fastened parts, for instance collar 13 and the head 11, being overlapped by the latter, and thus held against displacement. The coils 17 surround the head 11 and extend a distance outwardly beyond the same. As a result, if clothing should contact with the coils 17, the wearer will be warned of his proximity to the moving machinery. In addition, the coils will not catch into the clothing so as to tear or otherwise injure the same.
Attention is called to the fact that the resiliency of the coils enables the coils 17 to be depressed toward the shank 18 so that a wrench or other tool may engage the head 11 at desired times.
As merely one practical embodiment has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A guard for the purpose specified having resilient coils to enclose the head of a fastening, said coils extending outwardly beyond the head, and means to secure the coils on the shank of a fastening intermediate the head thereof and the work.
2. A guard for the purpose specified having coils to enclose the head of a fastening, and the guard having coils of less diameter than said coils to abut the head to prevent detachment oi the guard.
3. A guard for the pi'lrpose specified con sisting of a single strand of resilient material,
said strand having coils to enclose and ex diameter than the other coils and providing 10 means for the attachment of the guard coils.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM G. CLINE.
