To all `whom t may concer/L' Be it known that l, FRANK Gf. llllinson, a citizen ot the lUnited States oi America, residing at (irroveland Station, in the county of Livingston and State ot New York, have invented certain new and usetul lmprovements in Metalv Burial Receptacles, ot which the following is a specification.
T he primary object of the invention isthe provision of a burial receptacle pre/ter* ably formed ot' metal such as zinc coated steeh adapted tor employment; both as a casket and a shipping vault or box. the device possessing great. strength and being impervious to moisture.
A further object of the invention is the provision ot a burial receptacle having a double top and being air and water tight as well as absolutely indestructible. The receptacle is easy to handle, possessing great strength combined with lightness and is constructed without the use ot' bolts'or rivets inside the receptacle. AThe burial receptacle broadly comprises the box l() with an inner lid .1l for closing the top thereof and a top 12 overlying the lid l1 as best illustrated in Figure El ot the drawings.
The box l() is rectangular in 'torni having ends 13 and sides 14, being separate members joined together by overlapping beads or corner portions l5 and attached to a metal bottom 1G by marginal beads or overlapped portions 17. The sides and ends are termed of innerand outer layers of sheet metal 18 and i9 respectively and are bent into a groove or depression 2() spaced from the upper edge 2l ot the box 10 and a siinilar groove 22 spaced from the bottom 16 thereof.
The sheet metal 18 and 19 is bent. outwardly and inwardly in overlapping relations at substantially the center of the box 1() forming outwardly projecting ledges 23 upon the ends 13 and sides 14e ot the receptacle. Suitable handles 24 are secured to the ledges at any points desired and of any desired number, two handles 9A. being herein illustrated upon the ledge 23 at the longt tudinal side of thevreceptacle illustrated in Figure l. y

It will be seen that the lid 1l is readilyplaced in position and the top l2 mounted thereover while suitable cement or other plastic material 35 positioned in the trough 25 seals the joint between the 10,'the lip 30 of the the top l2 g the latter and pivoted at the lower ends beneath the trough 25.

The handles being secured to the ledges 23 and all of the joints being in the forni of' brazed beading, there are no bolt or rivet portions projecting within the receptacle.
The grooves 2l) aud 22 in the sides and ends of' the box l() may be fitted with wooden strips if found desirable for ornamentation or for the purpose of attaching cloth-or other covering to the box 10. This form of receptacle eliminates separate corner members such as those commonly employed and insures great strength with either round, elliptical or square ends. The fasteners 36 secure both the lid and top members in locked position for closing the box l0. While the form of' the invention herein set forth is believed preferable. it will be under- ,stood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of" the invention.
The lid fastener shown in Fig. 9 includes a plate 40 carried by the marginal portion l2 of the casket, a lever 4l being hinged as at 42 to the plate 40 and having a resilient hook 43 hinged at 44- to the lever 4l. The, lower free end -t of the hook -l-i'l is adapted to engage beneath the overhanging trough portion 25 of the receptacle and whereby the movement of' the handle l-l/ is adapted to lock and release the hook f3 in either position desired.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
1. A burial receptacle connn'ising a box having an upper edge, a marginal trough surrounding the upper edge of the box, a sheet metal lid having an upstanding inarginal flange adapted for overlying said edge when the lid .is positioned in the open top ofthe box, an outwardly projecting lip upon Said flange positioned within the trough when the box is closed and transverse ribs carried by the lid between the flanges at the sides of' the lid.
