Description

Jan. 15, 1924 1,481,170 J. J. WOMPEY COOLING Box Filed May 12. 1922 .$3 1 INVENTOR. M John J. Wompey s @ATTORNEY Patented dan., 15, 1924.
UNTED STATES JOHN J. WOMPEY, 0F DENVER, COLORADO.
COOLING BOX.
Application led May 12,
T o all whom t may con-cern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. WoMPnr, a citizen of the United States,l residin at Denver, in the county of Denver and btate of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cooling boxes for the preservation of food stuff and its principal object -is to provide a container of this character in which simplicity of construction is combined with strength, durability and racticability in use.
Boxes ma e in accordance with my invention may be used separately in one or more units or they may be embodied in the construct-ion of soda fountains, refrigerators and other similar structures, it being understood that my invention is -particularly adapted to maintain ice cream and other confections in a frozen condition.
It is a further object of my invention to rovide a box of the above stated type which 1s constructed without the use of nails, rivets, screws or other like fastenin means and which therefore can be produce at a eatly reduced cost of manufacture, an has none of the defects often caused by broken screw or rivet heads or leaky joints.
An embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts. are similarly designated and in which- Figure 1 represents a partially sectional top view of a cooling box of my improved construction j Figure 2, a Vertical section taken on thev line 2 2, Figure l-; and
Figure 8, an enlarged fragmentary section showing the construction of the corner joints of the metal shell and lining, constituting a distinctive feature of the invention.
Referring more specically to the drawings, my improved cooling box consists of a lining structure 5 of preferably rectangular form, a similarly shaped shell 6 which constitutes the outer surface of the device, and aniintcrposed filling 7 of suit-able insulating materia rrl'he lining and the shell are composed of metal plates which are fastened together at their edges by socalled slip lock joints of a channel-and-iiange type.
Each joint is formed by bending the adjoining edge-portions of each two sheets re- 1922. Serial No. 560,515.
spectively into a channel 8 and a flange 9 which interlock as shown in detail in Figure 3 of the drawings. I
After the flange is placed in the channel, the latter is filled with solder, and the boxshaped shell and lining are thus made air and water tight. The joints formed as shown and described furthermore reenforce the structures at their corners, and thereby add to their strength and durability.
The space between the lining and shell structure is occupied by an insulating filling which in the construction shown in the drawings, is composed o-f a layer of cork 10, a layer of wood 12 and an interposed sheet of insulating paper 18. In the bottom portion of the space, the wood layer is placed lowermost to provide a substantial base for the attachment of the short legs 14 uponA which the structure is supported. y
The' inner and outer members of the box formed and placed as shown,'are connected at their upper edges by a rectangular plate 15 which covers the filling and is fastened to the, members by the same joints which connect the plates of which the members are composed.
A sheet metal cover 16 filled with wood or other insulating material fits inside the box at the upper end thereof and 'is flanged for its support upon the top plate. The cover has a central opening normally closed by a flanged lid 17 which affords ready access to the interior of the receptacle.
A drain pipe 18 extending through a Wall of the box connects with an opening in the bottom portion ofthe inner member thereof, for the discharge of water.
A lock nut 19 screwed on the pipe against the outer surface of thebox, seals the opening through which it extends, against leakage, and this nut has a downwardly extending outwardly flaring lip 19* which prevents the melting frosting on the outside of the plilple1 from dripping along the surface of the s e Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
1. A cooling box of the character described comprising inner and outer boxlcover closing the inner member at the top rial in the of the box, and a filling ofinsulating matespace between the members.
2. A cooling box of the character described comprising inner and outer boxshaped members made of sheet metal, asheet metal plate connecting said members at their upper edges, and a fillin in the space between the members, consisting of layers of wood and cork and interposed sheets of insulating paper.
3. A cooling box of the character described comprising inner and outer boxshaped members made of sheet metal and spaced from each other at their sides and bottoms, a sheet metal plate connecting said members at their upper edges, a filling of insulating material in the space between the members, including a wooden part in the bottom portion of the space, and legs for the support of the box, fastened to said wooden part.
4. A cooling box of the character described comprising inner and outer boxshaped members made of sheet metal plates connected by channel-and-flange joints, a sheet metal plate connectin the members at their upper edges, and a figlling of insulatng material in the space between the memers.
5. A cooling box of the character described comprising inner and outer boxshaped members made of sheet metal plates connected by soldered channel-and-fiange joints, a sheet metal plate connectin the members at their upper edges, and a filling of insulating material in the space between the members.
6. A cooling box of the character described compnsing inner and outer boxshaped members made of sheet metal plates Connected by soldered channel-and-flange joints, a sheet metal spacing plate connected at the upper edges of the members by similar joints, a movable cover closing the inner member at the top of the box, and a filling of insulating material in the space between the members.
7. ln a cooling box of the character described, the combination with an insulated box structure, of a drain pipe extending through an opening thereof, and a nut on the drain pipe sealing the opening against leakage and having an outwardly Haring lip to conduct dripping moisture away from the surface of the box.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
JOHN J. WOMPEY.
