L The object of my present invention resides in the novel and improved-closures for the ends of a tubular can body made from fibre, such for instance ascardboard, or analogous materials and particularly to tubular can bodies which are cylindrical in shape.
A further object of the invention resides in providing one end of the can body with a fibre closure head fixed to the can by means of a flanged metallic ring so that the contents of the can, whether liquid, moist or dry, cannot leak from the body of the can between the fixed closure and the wall of the can body.
A further object of the invention resides in providing the opposite open end of the can body with a friction plug type of removable closure embodying a fihrefclosure head reinforced by means of a flanged metallic ring, which removable closure 'will likewise not allow the contents of the can. whether liquid, moist, or dry to leak from the can body between the removable friction closure and the can body.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a combination fibre and metallic can which. possesses advantages in points of simplicity and efficiency. and. at the same time proves itself comparatively inex ensive in cost of manufacture.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction. arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawine's forming a part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference denote simila parts throughout the several views:

Referring to the drawings, the tubular cylindrical body 1 of the can is preferably, although not necessarily, formed in the usual manner of helically rolling suitable paper, fibre, cardboard, or like material on a suitable roll and pasted so that the plies, or laps of body material are firmly secured together and then cut into the desired lengths. The number of plies of body material will depend, as is manifest, upon the size of the container, or can and for what purpose they are intended to be used.
In carrying out the aim of my present invention, I provide the bottom opening of the' can body 1 with a fixed closure embodying a head 2 made from suitable paper, fibre, cardboard, or equivalent material. The head 2 is drawn 0 as to provide the same with a vertical peripheral flange 3 to form a disk shaped closure head of the desired depth. The head 'lower edge of the body 1 a suitable distance,
as will also be apparent from Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The closure head 2 is seated and firmly secured in position at, and totally within, the lower end of the body 1 by means of a metallic fastener embodying a metallic ring 4, which ring includes an inner flange 5 adapted to lie parallel with the lower face of the closure head 2 adjacent the vertical flange 3 of the closure head 2 to form an annular support for the closure head 2. The ring 4 has its outer fa co firmly engaging the inner face of the ver-' tical flange 3 of the closure head 2, and, an outer flange 6 which is integral with the ring 4, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, has its inner face tightly squeezed into engagement with the lower faces of the body 1 and the closure head flange 3, and the outer ring flange 6 is then rolled, or crimped so that its free edge is forced to bite and embed itself into the outer face of the wall of the can body 1 adjacent the lower edge thereof, thus forming what has been found to be an absolutely tight seam between the outer face of the closure head flange 3 and the inner face of the can body 1, the. lower faces of the closure head flange 3 and the can body 1 and the inner face of the outer flange 6 of the retaining ring 4 and, finally, the inner face and edge of the rolled or crimped portion of the outer flange 6 of the fastening ring t and the outer face of the body 1 adjacent the lower edge portion thereof, which arrangement makes it impossible for liquids, or' moisture to penetrate between the fixed closure head flange 3 and the can body and thereby a ll'ording a particularly tight fixed bottom closure for the can body.
The top open end of the paper can body 1 is adaptedto be provided with a removable closure of the friction plug type, and this closure embodies a head 7 made from suitable paper, fibre, cardboard, or equivalent material. The head 7 is drawn so as to provide a vertical peripheral flange 8 to form a disk shaped frict1on closure head of the desired depth, and which is relatively deeper than the drawn closure head 2 fixed 'to the bottom of the can body. A circular disk 9 made from suitable paper, fibre, or like material and of any desired thickness and of a diameter not greater than the diameter of the closure head 7 is suitably mounted, o applied to the upper face of the head i' and is used primarily for the purpose of bearing advertising data, or any other identification data desired.
' The closure head 7 and the disk 9 are firmly and securely carried by means of a metallic ring member 10, which includes a horizontal inner liange. 11 adapted to lie parallel with the upper, or outer face of the disk 7 at the edge portion thereof only to form an annular stiffening member for the friction closure head. The ring member 10 also includes an integral outer flange '12, the outer face of which firmly engages the inner face of the verti -al flange 8 of the closure head 7 which flange terminates at the inner face of the outer flange 12 and the outer flange is finally rolled, or crimped outwardly and downwardly over the upper free edge of the closure head flange S and has its free edge biting into the outer face of the flange 8 of the closure head '7 so as 'to become embedded therein for tirmly and securely fixing the ring member 10 to the drawn paper closure head.
lly the above arrangement, the closure head and ring together form a friction plug type closure, which is easily and readily applied to the open top of the can body 1, yet seated so tightly within the open top end of the can body due to the outer face of paper flange 8 of the head 7 slidably and frictionally engaging the inner face of the can body 1 within the upper open end thereof to provide a friction scam thcrebetwecn, which is liquid tight and thereby positively prevents any of the contents of the can, whether liquid, or otherwise, to spill or leak out of the same, even though the can is laid on its side or held upside down. The rolled flange 12 of the ring 1 acts as a stop to prevent extreme downward movement of the removable friction closure when applied to the open top of the can body 1 by coming into contact with the upper edge of the c: 11 body, and it also acts in the dual capacity, as means which onecan readily gripby means of the fingers for removing the friction closure from the body of the can when contents of the can are to be removed.
It will be remembered that when the removable friction closure has been removed from the can, a full opening, that is an opening equal exactly to the inside diameter of the can, is afforded for the easy removal of the contents of the can, instead of a partial opening, or an opening of less than the full inside diameter of the can, as is now the case where friction plug type of cover, ortop is used as a closure for the open end of a can.
Referring to the modification, shown in Figs. 5 and (i, it is clearly evident that I have only eliminated the paper disk 9 shown in Figs. 2 and 4'.
In eliminating the disk 9, it will be seen,
that the modified form of my friction plug type of removable closure for the upper open end of a cylindrical-tubular paper can body embodies only the paper closure head 7 having the vertical flange 8 and that the metallic ring 10, which includes the inner flange ll, whichinstead of seating itself on the disk 9, as shown in Fig. at, the inner flange is seated upon the upper or outerface of the closure head 7. The outer face of the ring 10engages the inner face of the vertical flange 8 of the paper closure head 7, and the outer flange 12' of the metallic ring 10' is rolled or crimped over the free edge of the closure head flange 8 and has its freeedge embedded in the outer face of the closure head flange 8' inthe same manner, as shown in Fig. 4.
From the foregoing description, it is evi dent that I provide a can. or container having a paper body and paper closure heads, excepting for the light metallic flanged head retaining rings, that the can is extremely lightin weight, strong, durable and absolutel v liquid tight at both ends thereof and that one end of the can is provided with a remov able friction type closure, by the use of which, the open top end of the can body can be of the full inside diameter of the can body when the removable closure is detached from the can body.
The many advantages of the herein described invention will readily suggest themselves to those'skilled in the art to which it appertains.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed, but it is to be understood that I do not desire to restrict, or limit my self to the very details of the construction shown and described, which is merely illustrative, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without conflicting or departing from the spirit of the invention within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. The combination in a container, of a tubular paper body, a fixed closure for one end of said paper body, a removable friction plug top closure forthe opposite end of said paper body, said top embodying a paper disk having an upright flange, a flat paper disk adapted to contain identification data seat ed upon said flanged paper disk, an inner and outer flanged metallic retaining ring, the inner flange of said retaining ring being seated upon the flat paper disk and the outer flange of said retaining ring engaging the end face of the flange of the paper disk and then rolled over to cause the free edge thereof to bite into the outer facetof the flanges ofthe paper disk for locking the elements together and to serve as a stop for the friction plug to The combination in a container, of a tubular paper body, a fixed bottom closure on said body, said closure embodying a paper disk having a downwardly directed flanged wall, the free edge of which lies flush with the lower edge of the wall of the paper body, an inner and outer flanged metallic retaining ring for supporting said paper disk, the outer flange of the retaining ring engaging the lower face of the flange of the paper disk and the lower face of the wall of the paper body and said outer flange being rolled over ,to engage the outer face of the wall of the paper body with the edge thereof biting into the outer face of the wall of the paper body, a
