JOHN B. FREYSINGER,
OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE (it TOWIN'E MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAIHFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PIN-TUMBLER LOCK,
Application filed January 19, 1922; Serial No. 530,337.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. FREYSINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Tumbler Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in pin tumbler locks, the object being to con: struct the cylinder and housing for thepin tumblers of sheet metal, so as to avoid ma chine work and thus materially reduce the cost of manufacture without impairing the eiiiciency or durability ofthe lock.
With this object in view my invention consists in the details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims. a i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in section of the cylinder and tumbler housing the tumblers being shown in elevation; Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the tumbler housing removed from the cylinder; Figure 3 is a similar view of a modified form of cylinder and tumbler housing and Figure 1 is another modification of the housing.
5 represents the cylinder made of sheet metal bent into shape, and provided with openings for pin tumblers 6. These pin tumblers are adapted to enter recesses in a key plug, not shown, mounted. to rotate in the cylinder and be lifted bythe proper key to release the plug to permit the latter to be turned to actuate the bolt mechanism of a lock or other device, in the usual and well known manner. The edges of the sheet metal blank from which the cylinder 5 is made are preferably brazed or otherwise secured together, and it is preferably provided with shouldered ends 7 to receive the ring shaped ends 8 of the housing 9, and with slots 10 to receive the tongues 12 on said housings so that when the housing is assembled on the cylinder, the parts will be secured against the possibility of independent movement. v
The housing is made of sheet metal and comprises a top 11, ends 12 and sides 13, the
latter may be turned by ring shaped ends 8 being integral with the ends 12, all of said. parts being struck up or stamped from a single sheet of suitable meta the ends 12 and sides 13 being bent as shown in Figures 1 and 2 to form the housing and guide for the shanks 6 of the pin tumblers 6. The tumblers 6 pass through openings in the cylinder 5 and enter corresponding holes in the plug, not shown, for locking the latter against rotation, the plug being provided with the usual key slot for the passage of the key which operates in the Well known manner to lift the pin tumble-rs to a position to release the plug so that the the key.
The shanks 6 of the pin tumblers pass through holeslt in the top of the housing and are embraced by springs 15 whichbear at their upper ends against the inner face of the top of the housing and at their lower ends against the tumblers 6, or tumbler drivers as the casemay be, and tend to hold tllie tumblers in engagement with the key p ug. i
The front end 12 of the housing 9 is provided with integral cars 16 each having a rivet hole therethrough for attaching the housing and cylinder 5 carried. by the housing to the face plate of the lock.
If desired I may dispense with the ring shaped ends 8, shown in Figures 1 and 2, and attach the housing to the cylinder by the tongues 12, dovetailed or otherwise secured to the cylinder as shown in Figure 3, or i: may dispense with the front plate 12 of the housing and provide the side member 13 thereof with the forwmfdly projecting integral tongues 1.7 adapted to be passed through slots in the face plate of the lock and be riveted thereto.
In all the forms the tumbler housing is made independent of the cylinder, and both parts are made of thin rolled or drawn metal stamped and bent into shape, and as the parts can be stamped with sharp clean lines, accurate fit of the parts can be accomplished without any machine work and consequently at minimum. cost.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope oil my invention hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myselt to the exact construct-ion and arrangement ot parts shown and described but,
Having fully described my invention what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a pin tumbler lock, a cylinder formed from a metal blank bent into cylindrical form. a tumbler housing movable tumblers mounted in openings in the top of the cylinder and also in the top of the housing and tree or unsupported between said cylinder and the top of the housing, and springs for normally forcing the tumblers toward and into the cylinder.
2. In a pin tumbler lock,a cylinder and a tumbler housing separate from the cylindeiu the said housing having a projection. the said cylinder and housing being made of sheet metal bent into shape and secured together by the projection on the end of the housing engaging; the corresponding end ol the cylinder.
8. In a pin tumbler lock, a cylinder and a single housing for the entire set of tumblers each made 0t sheet metal. and secured together at their ends, the housing having a closed top, sidesand rear end.
4:. In a pin tumbler lock, a cylinder and housing each made of sheet metal and connected at their ends, and pin tumblers mounted and guided in the top of the cylinder and the top of the housing and free and unsupported between said cylinder and housing.
5. In a pin tumbler lock, :1. cylinder and housing each made of sheet metal and bent into shape, the housing being provided at its ends with ring shaped cnds to receive llaends ot the cylinder.
6. In a pin tumbler lock. a cylinder and housing each made (it sheet metal bent into shape, the housing being provided with ring shaped ends to receive the ends of the cylinder and with projections to enter slots in said ends.
7. In a pin tumbler lock, a \'lindcr. a sheet metal housing closed at its top. sides and ends and secured to the top oi the cylinder. and tumblers guided by and movable in holes in the top ot the c \'lindor and also in the top ot the housing.
8. In a pin tumbler lock. a cylinder and a. housing securt-id to the latter. the housing being made of sheet metal. and having loldcd sides and ends, the trout end ha vine; side cars with holes throi'lgh the same tor the :lll:ll'll ment of a taco plate of the lock.
9. In a pin tumbler lock. a sheet mcia': cylinder termed tronl a lat blanl; bent into cylindrical form. a housing made of sheet metal and secured to the top (it the c' \lin lcr. tumblers mounted in and guided by the top ot the cylinder and top o l' the housing and springs within the housing; and beariu; against the tumblers tor yicldingly holding the latter in their operative position.
In testimony whereot. I have signed this specification in the presence oi two subs-wribing witnesses.
JOHN B. FllllYSINGlCl-l. .Vitnesses CHAS. A. BERRY, Urns. ImnTN.
