The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and arrangement of parts', so as to reduce the cost of producing and assembling' of the parts, so that, if desired, padlocks of very small size may be producedwithout sacrificing the element of safety.
With the above and other objects rin view, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the present disclosure, this invention includes all features in the said disclosure which are novel over the prior art.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a casing I5 which may be readily cast in metal, synthetic resin, such as Bakelite or other suitable material with a central rectangular opening I6 and with a deep vertical round shackle recess I1 at one side and with a shallow round shackle recess I8 at the opposite side. One of the sides I9 of the opening I6 is formed with transverse grooves 20, 2|, 22 and the other side 23 is formed with corresponding grooves 24, 25, 26. The sides I9 and 23 of the opening I6 are also provided with notches 21-28, the notch 28 intersecting the shackle-recess I1.
At the bottom of the casing is a hole 29. The
front of the casing is formed with an undercut wall 30 vwhich is interrupted by ya stop-lug 3|, and the rear of the casing is formed with a similar wall 32 and lug 33.
Seatedv in the hole 29 is a keyhole-button 34 which is of cup-shape with an outwardly-extending annular ange 35 to prevent the button from passing through the hole 29, and the button is also formed in its bottom with a keyway-s1ot 36. A keyway change-plate or tumbler 31 is seated in the grooves 20, 24, and a similar tumbler may be seated in the grooves 2l, 25. These tumblers are preferably formed from sheet-metal, with an offset central portion 38 and with shoulders 39 which seat upon the sides of the opening I6. If. only one tumbler is, employed,` it may be entered into either the grooves 20,24 or the grooves 2|, 25, and may be arranged with the offsets 38 eX- tending either upwardly or downwardly, thus providing for a variety of key changes.
The shackle 48 is of U-shape with a long leg 4I and a short leg 42. The end of the long leg 4I is formed with a spring-chamber 43 to receive a helical spring 44 which has a bearing on the bottom of the shackle-recess I1. The leg 4I is formed with an annular groove 45. A ilat metal spring 46 is bent to form a head 41, a long leg 48 and a short leg 49, and this end terminates in a finger 58. The head is seated in the notch 21,
the long leg 48 extending into the notch 28 to enter the groove 45 in the shackle-leg 4I. A sheet-metal housing 5I is formed with an upper arm 52 and a lower arm 53. The upper arm is formed with a perforation 54 to form a seat for the inner end of .a key, and below the arm 52 is a slot 55 to receive the spring-linger 50. The lower arm 53 is formed with a key-slot 56. The upper arm 52 is passed through the grooves 22 and 26, and the lower arm 53 stands over the keyhole-button 34, and the corners 51, 58 of the upper arm 52 are turned down onto the casing so as to lock the housing in position. One edge of the upper arm 52 extends into the shackle-recess I1 and into the groove 45 of the shackle-leg 4I, so as to limit the outward movement of the shackle, the housing 5| also holding the other parts of the lock in proper position.
When the proper key is inserted and turned, the long leg of the spring will be moved out of the groove in the long leg of the shackle so as to release the same, and allow it to be raised by its spring and lift the short leg out of engagement with the casing, the outward movement of the shackle being limited by the edge of the housing.

I claim:`
1. A padlock comprising a casing having a central opening, transverse grooves and spring notches in` the side walls of the casing, a key tumbler mounted in saidA grooves, a verticallymovable shackle, a spring to hold the shackle in a-locked position, said springformed with head seated in one notch, one leg of the spring extending into the other notch to engage the shackle, the other leg formed with a finger, and ahousing mounted in the casing and adapted to hold all of the parts of the lock in position and formed with a slot to receive said nger.
2. A padlock comprising a casing having a rectangular central opening, transverse housing and tumbler grooves in the side Walls of the opening, a key tumbler mounted in said tumbler grooves, a vertically-movable shackle, a spring to hold the shackle in a locked position, and a housing having a lower arm formed with a key slot and an upper arm seated in the housing grooves and interlocked therewith to hold the tumbler and spring of the lock in position.

A padlock comprising a casing having a rectangular central opening, transverse housing andL tumbler grooves in the side walls of the opening, a key tumbler having an offset central portion' mounted in said tumbler grooves, a vertically-movable shackle, a spring to hold the shackle in a locked position, and a housing having' aV lower armv formed with a key slot and an upper arm seated in the housing grooves and interlocked therewith to hold the tumbler and spring of the lookin position.
4. A padlock comprising a casing having a rectangular central opening, transverse housing and tumbler grooves in the side walls of the opening, a keyhole at the lower end of the cen- ,tral opening, a keyhole-button in said keyhole,
a key tumbler mounted in said tumbler grooves, a vertically-movable shackle, a spring to hold the shackle in a locked position, and a housing having a lower arm formed with a key slot and an upper arm seated'in the housing grooves and interlocked therewith' to hold the shackle against removal and the tumbler, spring and keyhole-button of the lock in position.
