Description

D. E. HAYES. CHAIR ATTACHMENT. APPLICATION FILED NOV 22. 1921 Patented Oct. 24,1922.
Patented @ct. lafaili.
. CHAIR ATTACHMENT.
Application filed November 22, 1921., Serial No. 517,103.
To all whom it may 00% earn Be it known that I, DENNIS E. Harris, of 0 i rioston, 1n the county of ouliolh and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Chair Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to adevice which may be. attached to the back side of, for example, a theatre chair or other suitable support to form a holder for various articles such as a programme, seat check and a garment or hat of the user of the seat in the rear thereof. For simplicity of construction it may be made mainly of sheet metal stamped to proper shape and attached to the support by screws or otherwise.
It will be understood by reference to the drawings in which it is shown in its preferred form.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device attached to its support.
Figs. 2, 3 and .4 are sections on lines 2-2, 33 and l4, respectively, of Fig. 1.
A denotes a chair back or other support to which my device is attached. The body of the holder consists of a plate B, preferably of sheet metal, which is bent rearwardly at its two sides as at Z) and also at its lower part, as at Z), the sides having lateral flanges 5 by which the plate may be attached to the support, the whole form ing a pocket 6 to receive a programme or other articles, such as a handkerchief, the bend Z) forming the bottom of said pocket. The plate B preferably has a downward extension C below the bend Z).
To the front of the plate B and preferably near its edges is attached means for holding an advertising card, such means, for ex ample, comprising strips 1) and removable strip D, these strips forming a frame into which an advertising card may be slipped. This frame may consist of a strip or strips of sheet metal bent into U-shape in cross section, to form grooves, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4t and which grooved strips are adapted to receive the top and bottom edges of a card. As shown three sides of this frame are permanently attached to the plate B while the fourth side D is detachable, being adapted to be engaged at its ends with the ends of the top and bottom grooved strips D. The side piece D has a perforated tab (Z by which and a screw or nail d said side piece may be fastened in place. By removing the fastener cl and the strip D,
(see the grooves in the strips 1) will be to receive an advertising card or Fig. 1,) exposed the like and the part D to form the fourth side of the frame, and said part D may then be secured in place by the fastener cl. Thus the advertising card may be changed from time to time as may be desired.
In addition ll preferably provide a pocket D which may be struck up from metal and attached by solder or otherwise to the extension C and which pocket may be used for holding, for example, a theatre check or may be put to any other convenient use.
also preferably provide a spring clip e by means of which a. hat or other article may be supported. As shown the clip 6 is made of sheet metal and is attached to one end of an extension E of a spiral spring a which is wound around a pin 6 supported in a housing 6 The other end of the spring is attached to the housing 6 so that the clip 0 normally pushes against the extension C.
This device on being applied to the rear of a theatre seat provides means for holding a programme, i. e., the pocket Z the frame D, D affords means for holding an adver tising. card of such construction that the advertising card may be retained in place for any desired period of time and may not be removed except by the removal of the screw which holds the part D in place. It also provides means (pocket D for holding the check which entitles the user to the seat behind the seat on which the device is placed and means for holding the users hat. Hence the device being self-contained and compact does not incommode the user of the seat in front of which my device is put, and is of great utility for the purposes referred to. It is simply and easily constructed and being preferably made of sheet metal may be struck up at very little expense.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A holding attachment consisting of a sheet-metal plate having rearwardly bent side parts with lateral flanges by which it may be secured against a flat support, to afford a pocket, and a rearwardly bent part to form a. bottom for said pocket with a downward extension below said bottom, a closed card-holding frame attached to the front of said pocket part and comprising grooved te-p and bottom parts, to receive the top and bottom edges of a ca rd, a remay be replaced 2 naesaea movably mounted side part which may be closed card-holding frame attached to the front of said pocket part and comprising grooved top and bottom parts, to receive the top and bottom edges of a card,'a removably mounted side part which may be detached for the insertion or removal of the card, a spring clip mounted below said frame and bearing against said downward extension of said plate, and a check-holding pocket mounted on said extension.
