Description

-\ S. .THMPSBL Coal-Scuttles.
N0. 143,311, i PatentedSept'TnberSO,i873.
UNTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMASA S. THOMPSON, OE LITTLE EALLS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOE To HIM- SELE AND LOUTS vASALY, OE SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEM'ENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,311, dated September 30, 1873; application filed June 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMASA S. THOMPSON, of Little Falls, in the county of Morrison and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Scuttles, of which the following is a speciiication:
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in coal hods or scuttlesg7 and it consists in the cover thereof, which is made in two parts, which are hinged at opposite sides so as to be opened and closed by the bail, the construction and arrangement being as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a Side view of the improved article, showing the cover closed. Fig. 2 is an end view, showing the cover open.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the scuttle. B is the bail. C C are the two parts of the cover. These parts are identical in form and size, each forming half of the conical cover D, as represented in Fig. 1. These parts are fitted to the top of the scuttle, so that when closed they cover it entirely, leaving a small opening in front, if desired. The parts C C are hinged to the opposite sides of the scuttle, so that they will turn up to a vertical position, as seen in Fig. 2, and expose the entire top of the souttle when it is necessary to empty or ill it. E E are hooks attached to the cover on each side, which receive the bail when the latter is turned back, as seen in Fig. 2. By this means the scuttle is opened, as, by bearing down lightly on the bail, the parts C C are thrown up. Fig. 2 represents the bail and cover in this position. When the bail is raised from this position it strikes the cover on each side and forces the parts together, as seen in Fig. 1. F is the tilting bail in the rear of the scuttle.
.These scuttles, with the covers, are made of sheet or galvanized iron or copper, as may be found convenient, and of any size.
The advantages are, that the cover thus constructed prevents spilling the coal when charging the stove, and is opened and closed entirely by the bail in the ordinary mode of handling tlie scuttle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A coal-scuttle cover made in two parts, C O, hinged to opposite sides of body, and opened as well as closed by the bail B, 'as described.
AMASA S. THOMPSON.
