commune MATCH SiZiFEAND IGNITING DEVICE.
Application filed. December 26, 1818. Serial No. 268,320.
T 0 11M whom it may concern:
Be it known that .l, 'JAoon E. Nnnrnua citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Match Safes and Igniting Devices, of whichthe following is a specification. i
Certain features of thepresent invention relate to match-safes combined with matchigniting devices, and are in the nature of improvements over my Patent No. 1,144,612, and my application No. 250,945 (nowPatent No. 1,335,012, dated March 30,1920), in which the matches are struck upon the outer strip of a coil of igniting material, and in which the exposed portion of the strip may be torn off when used up.
One of the fea'tures of'the present improvements relates to lncreasing the durability of the strip. The strip, according to the present improvements, is coated with igniting material upon both its outer and inner sides, thereby doublingv its life. This improved strip is coiled within the drum, which may generally resemble the drum set forth in said application No. 250,945. The strip is drawn out throughan aperture 111 the wall of the drum, and wound around the drum and secured by a clip. This clip, insteadof being set. off. to one side of the aperture, as in said application, may be ar ranged to bear upon the strip at both sides of the aperture. Hence, it is rendered convenient to leave exposed either of the faces of-the strip when winding the same around the drum; that is, the strip may be wound either to theleft or right as it emerges from the aperture, and,"in either case, it may be held by the central clip. Hence, after the first exposed face of the outer winding is used up,.it may be released from the clip and wound around'the drum in .the opposite direction, and resecured by the clip, whereby an entirely fresh match-igniting surface is brought into use without withdrawing a new portion of strip from the drum, so that the life of the coil is doubled; Another featureof the presehtrmprovements relates to the cap surmounting the drum which contains the coil. This drum in said application N0..250,94.-5' is held down upon a base by means of an interior connection, which is in the form of a-box and serves as a match-safe. This box extends down withinthe coil and has at its upper end a cap to catch over the top edge of the drum, and at its lower end. a thread whereby it is threaded into the base, thereby drawing down the drum upon the base. In said application, the box and cap are integral, so that it is found to be prohibitive to form this member of gold or other fine metal, owing to the great cost. According to the present improvements, the box portion or body of the matclrsafe, which is concealed within the drum and pedestal, may be made of inferior metal, while the cap, which sur mounts said body and is attached thereto, may be made of fine metal; the. cap preferably having an annular enlargement or flange at its lower end to telescope over the top of the box and thereby make the interior wall .of the cap flush with the interior of the box or safe.
Another feature of the invention resides in confining the exposed winding of strip more effectively between the flanges which project below and above the same, the lower flange being formed inthe drum and the upper flange belonging to the cap. In said application, the clip hinge is supported by "is to reduce the amount of this clear space 'andthereby avoid substantial upward displacement of the strip. there is provided a novel for holding the clip.
For this purpose, bracket or mount This bracket may be made of a piece. of sheet-metal, and may, comprise a mam portion fastened against the wall Tv'ltlllll the drum.
From the top ofthis main portion, there is bent outwardly a leaf, from which are bent downwardly ears to carry the pivot of the clip.
This leaf is so thin that is occupies very little space, thereby substantially diminishing the distance between the top of the ignit ing strip and the bottom of the confining head of the cap.
.In said application. the lower portion of the match box has threads rolled there n to engage a threaded nipple rising'from the base, so that, by turning the box around, the cap may be made to bear down upon the drumland force the same downwardly, together. with the pedestal, which is thus firmly secured to the base. One of the objectsof the present invention is to render the match box suitablefor matches of differ:
igniting coil. t Figure mind ent lengths, and to this end an adjustable bottom is provided. This may he in the form of a shallow hoX, having threads rolled in the side walls thereof, to fit within-the threads which (as above explained) are rolled into the hottoln'ot'themainportion or body of the match box. This bottom may he rotated to raise o'rlowerthe same independently, and thereby accommodate it to matchesof different heights. Otheriieatures and advantages inafter' appear. 'lntheaccompanying drawings,

Figure 3 is a sectional elevation-of parts seen at'Fi ure 1. I
Figure 4 is av fragmentary side elevation of parts of the pre'ferred forms of clip mountings seen at Figure 2.

This coil may he placed within at drum '13, which may correspond substantially with the drum disclosed in said application No.
950,945, and may have an aperture 13 tl'lrougrh which the stripdO-may be paid out. A clip to hold the tip of the expose d winding o'listrip may consist otlizupair oflegs 14 pivoted at their upper ends-at lowit-hin cars 16 provided upon the exterior oft-he drum; and they may carry'at their lower ends a roller 17 to spring'under ahead 18 at the bottom edge or floor ofthedrum 13.
At Figure 5, the strip is shown as broughtoutthrouo h said apertnre 13 and carried to the left entirely around the drum far enough to overlap saidapert-ure, where it is .clipped by-the members 14.. After theey posed surface of the strip becomes worn off, the clip maybe released and this outer winding maybe loosened and'carried around in reversedirection, as atI Figure I7, and re- .eng-aged hy the clip, thus fdouhling, the lite of this winding. After both sides have thus been used, a fresh portion of the strip may he pulled out through the opening 13 and wound in either direction around the drum andsubsequently reversed, and so on.
Said drum 13 surmounts a cylindrical pedestal 1'9, whichmay be integral with the head 18 and drum 13, and may rest upon a seat 520 formed upon a "base 21. This drum is held down upon the hasehy means of an interior hollow device 22, which, constitutes a match lUOX arranged within the coil 10 of match-igniting strip and extending 'down into thepedestal lf). Thisinatch'box'has an annular oapQSto rest-111 11 the top edge of the drum 123; anddn'the'hOttmn o'f'the match box are rolled'threads 2 'l,to fit threads in a nipple 25 which risesifrom the base 11 within the pedestal '19.; so that, byturning 'the matchbox around'the cap 23 is caused to; serve as a clamp, for forcing: the drum and pedestal down'firnily-upon'thebase 21.
The main .portion of the match box E22 compriseswafhollow cylinder, upon which is low horror cup, comprising afloor 2'9 and a trylin drical threads at 31 -to fitthe. inner faces of the threads 24 rolled in'the matchbox 22-. There inayhe pressed'inthe'hottom of. the loox'a transverse'nick'32, toaccolnmodate a screw-driver which maybe inserted from the topoi the device to raise or lower theifloor. v
I At Figure 6 is shown a novel mounting for the clip which holdsthe igniting strip, said'mounting or'hracket comprising apair oi wertical inner plates 33, one upon each side of the egress opening'18 so that the strip can .he led outihetween saidplates.
